Study: World Population Living 6+ Years Longer from 1990

You'll probably want to start saving for retirement if you haven't already. Global life expectancy has risen by more than six years since 1990. An analysis of the 2013 Global Burden of Disease study finds that falling death rates from heart disease and cancer in rich countries and better survival rates in poor countries from diarrhea, tuberculosis and malaria mean people are living longer.

The only exception to this is in southern sub-Saharan Africa, where deaths from HIV/AIDS have knocked off five years of life expectancy since 1990. Study leader Christopher Murray says, "The progress we are seeing against a variety of illnesses and injuries is good-- even remarkable-- but we can and must do better." Murray notes that some chronic diseases that have been neglected and are rising threats to life include drug disorders, liver cirrhosis, diabetes and kidney disease.

Ibuprofen Extends Lives

If you've ever had a headache, it's likely you've taken ibuprofen. The popular painkiller you may know as Advil has been found to extend the life of yeast, worms and flies by about 15 percent. Researchers say that if that applied to humans it would mean 12 extra, healthy years of life. It's thought the drug slows down aging by preventing cells from absorbing a compound called tryptophan, which is found in foods such as turkey, chocolate and eggs.

Study author Dr. Chong He says, "There is a lot to be excited about. Ibuprofen is a relatively safe drug found in most people's medicine cabinets." Previous research showed the drug perked up aging mice.

Hug your loved ones close this holiday season. Scientists say that hugging and cuddling is good for our health, and may help prevent infection and relieve stress. Researchers asked 400 participants about their personal conflicts and the type of emotional support they received before exposing them to a common cold virus. They found those who felt well-supported by family and friends were less likely to catch the cold, and that hugs were responsible for one-third of the protective effect of social support. As if you needed an excuse to cuddle more any way.

Odds of You Dying on Your Birthday? Higher than Average

Just because your birthday is a special occasion doesn't mean accidents can't happen. In fact, a new study finds that the odds of dying on your birthday are actually higher than on other days. Scientists looked at the death records of more than 25 million people who died over a 14 year period. They found that over 73,000 people died on their birthday, nearly seven percent more than would be expected. Study leader Pablo Pena says the phenomenon could be caused by people deviating from their usual behavior, including partying in excess or traveling, but that some deaths are suicides triggered by the "birthday blues."

The Advantage of Having an Average Looking Face

Nobody wants to hear they're average looking, but a new study reveals that people with "typical" faces are viewed as more trustworthy. Psychologists created a scale of faces ranging from unattractive to very attractive. Female participants than rated each face for trustworthiness or attractiveness. The results revealed the closer a face was to the most typical face, the most trustworthy it was considered to be by participants. It's thought we're most comfortable with average looking faces because they are familiar, and it is human nature to fear the unknown and unusual.

Anonymous Producer Claims Casting Black Actors Hurts a Film's International Box

A newly leaked Sony email reveals a producer's opinion that international audiences are less likely to see a movie with African American actors in the lead roles. The unnamed producer allegedly sent the email shortly after the release of The Equalizer starring Denzel Washington.

The email stated, "No, I am not saying The Equalizer should not have been made or that African American actors should not have been used (I personally think Denzel is the best actor of his generation,) Casting him is saying we're ok with a double if the picture works. He's reliable at the domestic box office, safe, but has not had a huge success in years. I believe whenever possible the non-event pictures, extra 'bets' should have a large inherent upside and be made for the right price. Here there isn't a large inherent upside."

The producer continued, "I believe that the international motion picture audience is racist -- in general pictures with an African American lead don't play well overseas. But Sony sometimes seems to disregard that a picture must work well internationally to both maximize returns and reduce risk, especially pics with decent size budgets."

  • According to Radar Online, The Equalizer earned $191 million globally -- 47% of that was overseas. Most films score at least 65% of their earnings outside of the U.S.

More Employers Holding Holiday Parties, Giving Bonuses

Scrooge would be disappointed. A new survey reveals that more employers are planning office holiday parties and giving year end bonuses this year than in recent years. Harris Interactive polled more than 3,000 employees and 2,200 hiring managers and HR professionals back in September.

Sixty-three percent of employers said they plan to throw a holiday party this year, and most workers said they plan to attend. Still, 96 percent of workers said they would always take a cash bonus over a party if given the choice, and 46 percent of employers said they planned to hand out bonuses. More then a tenth of bosses planning to give bonuses say they'll give more than they did last year. Would you rather have a holiday party or a bonus?

Record Number of People to Travel this Holiday Season

Many people are expected to head over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house this holiday season. AAA predicts 98.6 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home between December 23rd and January 4th. That's up four percent from last year and the largest number on record.

Ninety one percent of the expected travel will happen via car which is helped by the fact that gas prices are the lowest they've been since 2009. GasBuddy.com estimates Americans are saving 250 million dollars per day on fuel thanks to low prices, but 83 percent of the 100,000 people GasBuddy surveyed say they plan to save the extra money or pay off debt with it.

Expectant Dads Also Go through Hormonal Changes

Some of the changes a pregnant woman goes through are obvious, but what about her partner? A new study finds that both men and women experience hormonal changes during pregnancy. This includes a significant decline in testosterone and estradiol in men, which researchers say may be caused by impending fatherhood.

Study author, Dr. Robin Edelstein says, "We don't know exactly why men's hormones are changing; these changes could be a function of psychological changes that men experience as they prepare to become fathers, changes in their romantic relationships, or even physical changes that men experience along with their pregnant partners."

2015 Will Be Year of Anti-Tech

How attached are you to technology? Experts predict 2015 will be the year when people stop using gadgets and social media, and instead embrace the simple life. The prediction comes from London-based communications agency Hotwire in their sixth annual Digital Trends Report.

The report notes, "While there are many early adopters out there scrambling around to get their hands on the latest smartwatch or iPhone, there are a group of much cooler kids working out ways to kill tech altogether."

Evidence of this? New data showing that the number of weekly U.K. web visitors to social networks has dropped 9 percent since this time last year, with the U.S., China, and Japan showing similar decreases. Also, back in August a team of developers launched a Kickstarter campaign for the noPhone, a fake cell phone meant to wean people off of their addiction to technology. Think you'll go anti-tech in 2015?

37 Percent of Married Couples Stay Together for the Kids

Marriages take lots of work, and sadly not all of them last. A new survey of 2,000 married parents reveals that 37 percent say they've considered asking their other half for a divorce, only to hold off due to concerns about how it would affect their children. More than 33 percent admit they have stayed married longer than they would have liked in order to save their children distress, with 21 percent of those people saying they considered themselves separated despite still living with their partner and acting like a couple in front of the kids.

One in five people say they will wait out the holidays before making a decision on whether to divorce or not, and 27 percent say they'll make an effort to hide martial issues during that time. Divorce lawyer Martin Loxley says it might not be worth it to fake it, adding,"Children often pick up on things and regardless of how much of a united front you put on, youngsters, particularly older ones, can sometimes see through it. In some cases children feel 'cheated' if, when they get older, they realize their parents were putting on a 'front' during their childhoods."

Study: Doctors' Offices Lose Millions over Magazine Theft

Do you usually read the magazines piled in the waiting room of your doctor's office? For a new study, researchers placed 87 magazines in waiting rooms and tracked the rate at which they disappeared. Men only Listen to Their Partner for Six Minutes

Listening is an important skill, and a new study confirms that men don't always give their partner their full attention. Scientists looked at 2,000 men, and discovered they stop listening after just six minutes of listening to their other half, but pay attention for a full 15 minutes when discussing sports or their sex lives with friends.

To be fair though, the study shows women listen longer and harder to their friends than they do to their partners. The topics men are most likely to tune out of: talk about people they've never met, talk about their partner's colleagues, anything about celebrities or reality stars, things about fashion or shopping, and information about other people's relationships.

Sleep Loss Causes Weight Gain

New research published in the journal Cell shows that volatile sleep and eating patterns can lead to negative metabolic changes in gut microbes. These changes have been associated with higher obesity rates, cancer, heart disease, diabetes and susceptibility to infection.

Research conducted at Stanford Univeristy showed that sleeping less than 7.7 hours per night can create an imbalance in the hormones that regulate appetite and satiation so that you feel hungry all the time but the food you're ingesting doesn't satisfy you. But when you sleep more than 7.7 hours your body's appetite regulation becomes more reliable.

What was the last thing you watched on TV? New data from Nielsen shows that Americans still love TV, but that most people are spending more hours surfing the web and viewing streaming services. In fact, 2.6 billion households are now "broadband only," meaning they don't subscribe to cable or pick up a broadcast signal.

That number is about 2.8 percent of total U.S. households, and more than double the 1.1 percent of household that were broadband only last year. Also, the average person watched about 147 hours of live television a month in late 2013, and that number dropped in 141 hours in 2014. On a daily basis, viewers are watching 12 minutes less TV than they were a year ago.

Garbage Munching Bugs Keep NYC Clean

When you think about cleaning something you probably don't imagine bugs, but a new study finds that insects actually help keep New York City clean. Researchers say that urban-dwelling bugs such as millipedes, ants, spiders and cockroaches consumer the equivalent of 60 thousand hot dogs each year.

Lead study author Elsa Youngsteadt says, "If insects weren't eating all of this food, it would accumulate and be foul." In experiments food was placed in small cages only accessible to the insects, and they were observed to consume 34 percent of it. Youngsteadt adds, "More than half the world's population lives in cities and we have to decide how the organisms that live around us provide services or disservices to us."

81% of College Students Fail to Graduate on Time

College is expensive, so you'd think you'd want to graduate as quickly as possible. A new study finds that just 19 percent of U.S. university students graduated within four years. The slow pace is reportedly so widespread that academic advisers are telling new students to expect their degree to take six years to finish. That extra time in the classroom equates to over 22 thousand dollars in tuition and over 45 thousand dollars of average missed wages.

Cost of Living Skyrockets

The cost of living is up, and it means Americans have to make spending cuts on non-essentials. Fourteen thousand households kept diaries on their spending for two weeks, and it revealed that some Americans are spending 40 percent more on health insurance than they did six years ago. Other data shows that between 2007 and 2013 middleclass spending rose about 2.3 percent, but at the same time, income raised less than half a percent.

All of this means families are spending less on furniture, entertainment, clothing and even child care. Economist Steven Fazzari says, "Part of the story is that your income growth is slowing. They're spending more on necessities, cutting back on other types." Also notable: since 2007 the cost of mobile-phone service has risen nearly 50 percent.

Study: Boys Gossip and Manipulate More than Girls

Girls have long gotten a bad wrap when it comes to non-physical aggression, but a new study finds boys are more likely to spread malicious rumors, be manipulative, and reject or exclude others at school. Researchers had 620 students complete a survey once a year between the ages of 11 and 18. They found young boys were more likely to engage in "relational aggression" as well as fall victim to this type of abuse.

However the number of boys who felt victimized by their peers significantly decreased over the seven-year period, while the number of girls who felt bullied remained about the same over the same time period. Study leader, Professor Pamela Orpinas says, "The findings ultimately emphasize a need to include boys and girls equally in programs aimed at reducing relational aggression."

Primates Have Been Drinking Alcohol for Centuries

Think about this as you knock back drinks at a holiday party: primates have been drinking alcohol for ten million years. Scientists looked at about 70 million years worth of primate genes and analyzed digestive enzymes that would allow them to consume ethanol, which is the form of alcohol found in rotting fruit. They found a genetic mutation from ten million years ago that would make it easier for the animals to digest ethanol-- the first record of that ability in primates.

Study leader Matthew Carrigan notes, "If the ancestors of humans, chimps and gorillas had a choice between rotten and normal fruit, they would go for the normal fruit. Just because they were adapted to be able to ingest it doesn't mean ethanol was their first choice, nor that they were perfectly adapted to metabolize it."

Left Handed People Make Less Money than Righties

Life's not fair, and a lot of factors that determine our luck are out of our control. A new study finds that left-handed people are likely to earn 12 percent less over their lifetime compared to right-handed people. Researchers looked at 47 thousand U.S. and U.K. workers and found that one in eight people were left-handed.

Study author Professor Joshua Goodman writes, "This paper is the first to demonstrate that lefties...have consistently lower labor market earnings than right-handed individuals [and] show consistently lower cognitive skills and higher rates of mental and behavioral disabilities." Goodman thinks the cognitive deficit is due to the wiring of a left-handed person's brain.

Drinking Coffee From White Mugs Makes It Taste Bitter

How do you take your coffee? A new study reveals the color of the mug you drink your coffee from can affect its flavor. Eighteen volunteers drank coffee from three different mugs: a white one, a blue one and a transparent one.

The participants said the coffee from the white mug tasted more "intense" and bitter than the coffee in the other mugs, even though each mug held the same coffee. Study leader George Van Doorn adds, "[Coffee shops] should carefully consider the color of their mugs. The potential effects may spell the difference between a one-time purchase and a return customer."

Hearing Songs You Dislike Makes You Less Generous

Music is powerful stuff, it can even influence how much money you'll shell out to a charity. Researchers from Japan had 11 male and female students fill out a questionnaire describing their musical tastes and emotional experiences brought on by music. Each participant was then played a song they really liked, followed by a song they said they disliked, with each song being followed by a period of silence. Each person was also given money and the discretion to share it or keep it.

People were found to share more money after hearing a song they liked, and be stingier after hearing a song they disliked. Researchers note, "Preferred music promotes altruistic behavior, whereas disliked music is associated with selfish behavior, and what differentiates these behaviors is the emotional response dictated by the listener's musical preferences."

Airline Aisle Seats Are the Grossest

Airplanes aren't known for being super clean places, but new data shows the germiest seats are the aisle seats. Microbiologist, Dr. Charles Gerba, collected samples from sinks, toilet handles, arm rests and other often-touched spots on over 20 flights.

He discovered that aisle seats contain many more germs than window seats, mostly because passengers grab onto them to keep their balance as they walk to or from the restroom. Other spots to avoid: your tray table and the bathroom in general, which Gerba says is not cleans mid-flight. A bright spot among all the dirty findings: the air on the plane is unlikely to make you sick because it is filtered.

Justin Bieber's Dad Throws Dog off Second Story Window

Justin Bieber's dad Jeremy Bieber threw the dog that he and the singer adopted off a second story balcony. According to the site, Biebz and his dad bought the American Bulldog named Karma a year ago. The dog was living at Bieber's dad's house in Canada, but Karma needed training, especially after biting Justin's little brother.

Dog trainer Trevor Dvernichuk said Bieber's dad grabbed the dog and threw him off the balcony into a snow bank. He went on to say that Jeremy told him to take the dog and to not bring it back until it was trained. Trevor still has the dog, but now Jeremy is saying that Trevor stole the dog and is involving the authorities.

  • Trevor previously said that he's concerned about the dog's welfare after the incident, but because he doesn't want to get in trouble with the law, he's willing to return the dog to Bieber's dad.

More Kids Hurting Themselves on Toys

Kids hurt themselves, it's a fact of life, but a new study finds that toy-related injuries have jumped 40 percent over the last 20 years. Boys and younger children are most affected, getting 26.9 toy-related injuries out of every 10,000. Back in 1990 that number was just 18.9. Lead study author, Dr. Gary Smith, says the toy causing the most injuries is the foot-powered scooter.

Most scooter accidents involved kids between the ages of five and 17, with the most common injury being lacerations. The American Academy of Pediatrics says to keep kids safe on scooters keep them away from moving traffic, supervise kids younger than eight, and make sure your child wears a helmet.

What Your Dreams about Murder Says about You

Do you think your dreams have any impact on your waking life? A new study finds they may. German researchers studied the character traits and dreams of over 400 college students. About 19 percent of respondents reported dreams in which they committed murder, and men reported higher numbers of aggressive dreams than women.

People who tended to be more aggressive in their waking life tended to have aggressive dreams more often. Also, introverted people tended to have more aggressive dreams, perhaps because their true emotions played out in their dreams.

Critics call the findings fishy, though, as a previous study found just one percent of men and 0.2 percent of women reported dreaming of committing murder.

Survey: Most of World Thinks Internet Is a Human Right

The results of a new international Ipsos survey found that the majority of people in the world think that affordable Internet access is a human right, with 83 percent of the 23,000 Internet users in 24 countries polled agreeing.

People in the developing world and places where there is more censorship were more likely to agree than people in countries where Internet access is the norm. So in the Middle East and Africa, 90 percent said Internet access is a human right, while in North America it was 76 percent. The United Nations Human Rights Council declared in 2012 that Internet access and online freedom of expression is a human right, but Mashable writes that there have been some high-profile dissenters. Among them is Vint Cerf, regarded as one of the "fathers" of the Internet, who said instead that same year: "Technology is an enabler of rights, not a right itself."

Marijuana Breath Test in the Works

A team at Washington State University is working on a breath test that help police officers identify drivers under the influence of marijuana. Since the state of Washington legalized recreational use of the drug in 2012, there has been much concern regarding stoned drivers.

The device that Washington State University is currently working on will be able to detect the presence of THC (the psychoactive agent in pot) on a person's breath, but not necessarily the amount present. The current legal amount in the state of Washington is 5 nanograms of active THC per milliliter of blood, according to the News-Tribune.

Study: Dogs Understand the Meaning of Words

You're not crazy—your dog DOES understand you! New research demonstrates that man's best friend comprehends more than just the emotion in its owner's words, a dog can recognize actual words. A researcher in England came to this discovery by giving commands to 250 dogs on either side of their heads.

Some of the messages were stripped of emotion and others were spoken in gibberish. The researcher found that about 80 percent of dogs would turn to the right side when hearing commands containing actual words. But when hearing them in gibberish, they turned to the left, looking for emotional hints. The study showed that dogs can make out real words and that a dog's brain processes speech into two parts: Emotional signals are handled on the right and the meaning of words on the left.

What Age Men and Women Find Each other Most Attractive

What age group do you go after? After analyzing the profiles of daters on OKCupid and OKTrends, researchers have created graphs indicating how our tastes in partners changes as we age. Study leader Christian Rudder says, "Women who are, say, 28 find guys who are also 28 about the most attractive, and so forth. Up until about 40, when that's getting too old." Not surprisingly, the findings reveal men at all ages find women at age 20 most attractive.

To that, Rudder comments, "From the time you're 22 you'll be less hot than a 20-year-old, based on this data. So that's just a thing. It is kind of terrible."
