Men Lie to Appear More Attractive on First Dates

What would you do to score a second date with an attractive person? Apparently men will do or say just about anything. A poll of British men reveals 72 percent admitted to bending the truth on a first date to appear more attractive. But what exactly do they lie about? Sixty-three percent admit they exaggerate their income, and more than half said they lied about hobbies and interests. Thirty four percent admitted they had even lied about their relationship status. Look for Houses with Teal Pumpkins: They Stand for a Great Cause

If you have little ones there's a good chance you'll be out trick-or-treating tomorrow evening. While out you may notice some teal pumpkins among the jack-o-lanterns. The funky colored pumpkins are a signal that children with food allergies can safely trick-or-treat at the home they're placed in front of. Nonprofit Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) started The Teal Pumpkin Project to raise awareness about food allergies.

Those who display the pumpkins give out non-food treats to trick-or-treaters such as small toys, glow sticks, or stickers. A FARE spokesperson says, "Halloween can be a tricky time-- quite literally-- for families managing food allergies because many traditional Halloween treats aren't safe for children with life-threatening food allergies." The CDC says nearly six million children in the U.S. have food allergies.

Men Wear "Sexy Fat" Women Halloween Costumes

Halloween's tomorrow, so if you don't have a costume yet you'll have to move quick. Some store-bought costumes choices are more offensive than others, so you'll want to be careful. For example, men have the option of dressing as a "Fat Tinker Belly," "Sexy Fat Cheerleader," "Fat Fairy," or even a "Fat Lap Dancer."

The costumes are designed and sold by Fun World, which features the costumes under the "humorous" category on their website. Other costume brands such as Smiffy's, Rubie's Costume Company and Forum Novelties offer their own takes on the "Fat Women" costume trend. Sociology professor Lisa Wade writes in the Huffington Post, "Many costume manufacturers...add fat hatred to the mix. Because there is nothing more disgusting and hilarious, we are told, than a fat woman. Except, perhaps, a fat woman who fails to be properly humiliated."

Bad-taste Baywatch: Many of the costumes, including this take on popular TV show Baywatch, are sold on Amazon.com

How to Handle Anxious Kids on Halloween

Halloween can leave lots of little ones scared silly, and unfortunately it can make some kids anxious about the holiday. Pediatric psychologist Dr. Kristen Eastman says that pre-school age kids have the toughest time separating fantasy from reality on Halloween and may experience nightmares or throw tantrums to avoid scary store displays.

To calm your kid's fears, take them around the neighborhood when the sun is still up and show them scary decorations so they can understand they're just pretend. Eastman also suggests talking to your child about what to expect while trick-or-treating, and letting them know it's ok to skip houses they might think are too scary.

Famous Musicians Die Younger than Everyone Else

You wouldn't think it, but there is a downside to being a rock star. A new study reveals that pop stars, rock stars and other musicians are more likely to die young than the rest of us. Researchers looked at seven decades of popular musicians' and found that they usually lived up to 25 years less than the average U.S. lifespan.

Of the nearly 13,000 musicians who were studied that died, 90 percent of them were male. Also researchers say the early 1990s were the peak years for death by suicide for musicians. Study author Dianna Kenny says the reason musicians die before their time is because the "pop music 'scene' fails to provide boundaries and to model and expect acceptable behavior."

Facial Hair Ages Men by 10 Years

Gentlemen, you may want to consider rocking the clean-shaven look. A new study reveals having stubble can make a man appear five years older, while having a full beard can age him as much as ten years. A panel of 300 people were shown pictures of celebrities who regularly change their facial hair, and were asked to guess how old the stars looked in each photo.

For example, the panel estimated David Beckham was four years younger than his actual age when he was clean shaven, and one year older than his actual age when he had facial hair. Study leader Asim Shahmalak says, "There is no doubt that facial hair and beards in particular do tend to make men look older."

How Much Americans Plan to Spend This Christmas

The holidays can easily become an expensive and stressful time for many. A new Gallup poll finds Americans expect to spend an average of $781 this holiday season, up from the average of $704 named last November. Sixty percent of respondents said they will spend the same amount on gifts this year as they did in 2013, while 24 percent say they'll spend less.

A full 13% say they expect to spend more this year than they did in 2013, which is about the average of the past decade. Gallup notes consumers are still less extravagant in their holiday shopping plans this year than they were right before the recession, but projections are almost back up to that level.

Shoud U.S. Parents Get Monthly Payments for Their Kids?

Many countries provide a universal child benefit, which gives parents a monthly payment from the government for each child they have, among them Western nations including Canada, the U.K., France, Germany, Israel, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland. Matt Bruening argues in the The Week that the U.S. should follow their lead, citing the fact that we have one of the highest child poverty rates among developed nations, and that universal child benefits are supported by both liberal and conservative parties throughout much of the developed world.

Proposing a suggested universal child benefit in the U.S. of $300 per month per child, Bruening says it would cut child poverty in half and overall poverty by one-quarter, lifting six million children and five million parents out of poverty, at a cost of one percent of the gross domestic product.

Gossip Boosts Self Esteem

Gossiping may not be the best thing for your karma, but a new study finds it might boost your self esteem. Dutch researchers asked participants to recall a time they heard either positive or negative gossip about another person, and then were asked questions to assess their self-improvement, self-promotion and self-protection concerns.

Those who recalled positive gossip had increased self-improvement value, while those who recalled negative gossip had increased self-promotion and self-protection. Lead researcher Elena Martinescu says, "Hearing positive stories about others may be informative, because they suggest ways to improve oneself. Hearing negative gossip may be flattering, because it suggests that others may function less well than we do."

People With Low IQ's Favor Beyonce's Music

What does your musical preference say about you? It might reveal something about your intelligence. For a new study software developer Virgil Griffith looked at the average SAT scores from different colleges, and then used information from Facebook to see what musicians students from each college favored.

According to the less-than-scientific findings, those with the lowest test scores listen to Lil Wayne, T.I. and Beyonce, while those with the highest scores prefer Beethoven, Sufjan Stevens and Radiohead. Even Griffith notes that correlation does not equal causation, so no, listening to Beyonce doesn't make you dumb.

Why Millennials Hate Voice Mail

How do you feel about voicemail? Millennials apparently hate it. Trend analyst Jane Buckingham says, "Everyone criticizes the millennials for being the 'me' generation and being so entitled. I don't think they're so entitled. I think they're just incredibly pragmatic. So for them if a voice mail isn't practical...and there's a more practical way of delivering the same information, they're gonna go for that."

The New York Times reported back in June that the phone service Vonage saw a significant drop in voice mail retrievals over the past year. Thirty-one year old Antonia Kidd explains her main problem with voice mail is that it's time consuming and says if someone really wants to get hold of her, there are lots of ways to do it. Still, other experts say when it comes to the workplace, millenials will need to adapt to the older generations' ways and leave and check voicemails.

More People Buying Puppies from Pet Stores

Despite the plea from shelters, people are still buying puppies from pet stores in the U.S. Furthermore, the U.S. Department of Agriculture does inspect the facilities of commercial dog-breeding facilities, but that doesn't mean they're nice places.

Cori Menkin of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals explains, "The regulation of breeders is so poor that all it really does is give consumers and the general public a false sense of security that their dogs are coming from a humane environment."

The industry is now moving away from that though, with some towns proposing a ban on the sale of puppies. Large national chains like Petsmart and Petco have even moved to a model where they do not sell dogs or cats, instead opening up space in their stores to house animals from local rescue groups.

The Things Americans Fear Most

The news is pretty scary lately, what scares you most? A new survey of 1,500 Americans found the number one thing that scares us: walking alone at night. The survey was conducted before the Ebola hysteria started, so if asked today participants may have changed their answers.

Researchers note this is normal; study leader Christopher Bader says, "We seem to go through cyclical waves in this country where suddenly there is something that terrifies everyone; then it will fade out and a new fear will arise." The fears rounding out the top five are: becoming a victim of identity theft, lack of safety on the Internet, being the victim of a mass/random shooting, and public speaking.

Bader adds, "People tend to fear what they realistically might face in their everyday life. These situations are very immediate to people, and they tend to scare them the most.

Mental Rest Promotes Learning

Your brain needs both work and play to thrive, finds a new study. Researchers from the University of Texas say the brain learns best after previously learned material is reflected on. Study leader Allison Preston explains saying, "We think replaying memories during rest makes those earlier memories stronger, not just impacting the original content, but impacting the memories to come."

She says when we learn something new it brings to mind all of the things we know already related to the new information, which causes it to be embedded into our existing knowledge.

Introverts and Caffeine Don't Mix Well before Meetings

Who doesn't like a little caffeine jolt in the morning? A newly released book reveals that introverts preparing for an important morning event should lay off the coffee. But why? Author Brian Little explains that the brains of introverts and extroverts respond differently to their environments.

He says that extroverts are typically "under the optimal level" of alertness in regard to their surroundings, and so the caffeine nudges them up to the perfect level. However, introverts start out above the optimal level of eternalness, so the caffeine just sends them further away from it. Little says if you're an introvert and you must fill the mug, "maybe stick with a nice cup of non-caffeinated tea instead."

Arguing with Your Spouse Can Make You Fat

You should really consider picking and choosing your battles at home. A new study reveals that arguing with a spouse can increase your risk for obesity. Researchers looked at 43 healthy couples who had been married for at least three years. They found that participants with both a mood disorder history and a hostile marriage burned an average of 31 fewer calories per hour than those from less hostile marriages.

Those in hostile relationships apparently have higher levels on insulin, which contributes to how fat is stored, and also experienced spikes in the levels of triglycerides-- a type of fat-- in their blood. The fewer calories burned could add up to as much as 12 pounds gained each year.

Where You Live Determines Who You're Attracted to

What kind of faces are you attracted to? Researchers surveyed 12 populations around the world, and found that only people in the most industrialized and urbanized environments thought that highly feminine women and highly masculine men are most attractive. Those in more remote, rural areas were found to like neutral faces, or sometimes the least "sex-typical" one. They also found that the perception that masculine males are more aggressive was more common among city dwellers.

Science Behind Sports Addiction

Are you an NFL fanatic or do you scoff at all organized sports? If you follow a team closely, science may know why. Sports psychologist Richard Lutsberg offers this explanation: "Euphoria is contagious, as is tragedy. It's very difficult in a relatively small town not to get caught up in the euphoria [of sports.]" It all has to do with the chemical dopamine. When the brain releases it after your team wins big, it can impair motor skills.

That explains why fans make irrational decisions after their team wins, or even loses-- either outcome can increase dopamine levels. Psychology professor Daniel Wann adds that sports fans are naturally less depressed people and tend to have higher self esteem. Eric Simons, author of The Secret Lives of Sports Fans: The Science of Sports Obsession sums it up saying, "I think that the point is it's not irrational. It's fun, and it's meaningful, and as one psychologist put it, 'Well it's not the worst thing you could be doing with your time.'

We Make Snap Judgements Based on People's Face Shape

What's the first thing you notice about a stranger? A new study reveals that we often make snap judgments about others based on the size and shape of their facial features. Carnegie Mellon University researchers warn that these snap judgements can lead people to make rash decisions.

Some of the findings: those with "babyface" features are often judged as being incompetent, while mature faces are assumed to be competent, and those with prominent cheekbones and high eyebrows are thought to be trustworthy. Study leader Dr. Christopher Olivola says, "We need to guard against letting our choices be biased by superficial cues."

Holiday Shoppers Might Avoid Hacked Stores

It's becoming the norm for retailers to get hacked, but will shoppers avoid retailers who got breached this year? The National Retail Federation reports the average shopper will spend about 804 dollars this holiday season, about five percent more than last year.

However, a report from CreditCards.com reveals that nearly half of major credit and debit card holders say they will "definitely" or "probably not" shop at retailers that had suffered a data breach. CreditCards.com's senior industry analyst Matt Schulz says, "If you're concerned about shopping at a store the safest thing that you can do, other than using cash, is to use your credit card because of the consumer protections that come along with it."

Why More Parents Are OK Having Kids Watch 'R-Rated' Movies

Are parents getting desensitized to sex and violence in movies? A new study reveals that "PG-13" movies now contain more violence than they did in the 90s, and the number of sex scenes in "R" rated movies is up too. But why? It may be because the more parents watch movies full of sex and violence, the less they care about the age of children watching them, too.

One thousand parents of pre-teens and teens were shown several movie clips in succession. At first, parents rated violent scenes appropriate for kids at the age of 16.9, and the sex scenes appropriate for those age 17.2. However, by the end of the study those ages dropped--parents thought kids age 13.9 could watch the violent scenes, and it was appropriate for kids age 14 to watch the sex scenes.

Miley Cyrus Needs More Security

A Miley Cyrus superfan was able to make it all the way backstage on Friday night, October 17th, by posing as part of the cleaning staff. 23 year-old Anthony Skinner was in the parking lot at Sydney's Allphones Arena when he noticed a a door open to a storeroom. When he went inside, he noticed some work boots and a neon vest used by the cleaning staff. He put on the vest and strolled right by security to the backstage area as he pretended to clean.

  • Skinner told BBC's Newsbeat, "My mindset was 'See how far you can take this,' . . . It wasn't planned at all. Everything just fell into place so perfectly."
  • The fan then proceeded past 50 to 100 employees and watched as they broke down the Bangerz set. He explained, I just started emptying bins, sweeping up the floor and stuff . . . I'm cleaning up for about 40 minutes to an hour. Not pretending to clean up, actually cleaning."
  • A short time later, a security guard asked Skinner to stand in a hallway so they could safely get Cyrus out of the venue. He explained, "My whole brain just emptied. I saw her and froze. All I could get out was 'Hey'. She looked at me, smiled and just kept walking."
  • Skinner posted a selfie in the neon vest as well as a copy of the note he would have given Cyrus if he had gotten close enough.
  • So far the Allphones Arena hasn't responded to media inquiries.

Your Birth Month Affects Your Mood

Are you getting crabbier as you age? It may have something to do with the month you were born in. Researchers from Budapest analyzed 400 people and found a direct connection between the subjects' temperament and the season in which they were born.

The findings break down like this: people experiencing dramatic mood swings were likely to be born in summer, those with positive dispositions tended to be born in spring or summer, those born in fall were less likely to become depressed, and those born in winter tended to be less irritable. Lead researcher Xenia Gonda says both environmental and genetic factors probably influence these traits.

When was the last time you got all dolled up? A new study reveals that women say they make themselves up to go out with the intent of impressing their female friends. Five percent of women even said they care more about what their best friend thinks than what their other half thinks when it comes to hair, makeup and clothes.

About 66 percent of women even admitted that getting a compliment from a female stranger meant much more than receiving one from a male stranger, and 33 percent said women gave them the most genuine compliments. Sixty-five percent of women also noted men are most likely to comment on their chest area and often say "you look nice" no matter what they actually look like. The average time it takes for a woman to fully primp: three hours and 38 minutes.

Misty Upham's Family Calls Her Death 'Suspicious'

Misty Upham's family does not believe she took her own life after police discovered her body at the bottom of a 150-foot ridge in Auburn, Washington late last week. They released a statement on Facebook over the weekend saying, "We would like to provide the following information to all of Misty's friends and family. We believe that Misty's death was accidental. She did not commit suicide. We believe she ran into the wooded area behind her apartment to hide from the police. The area in question has a hidden drop off and evidence suggests that she slipped and fell off of the steep embankment when she tried to get out of a view from the road. She simply did not see the drop off."

"We searched near that area that evening she disappeared and missed seeing her purse by 25 feet. I, Charles, went there after Fire Department officials recovered her body and you just can't see the steep drop until it's too late."

"Misty was afraid of the Auburn PD officers with good reason. In an incident prior to her disappearance, the Auburn PD came to pick up Misty on an involuntary transport to the ER. She was cuffed and placed in a police car. Some of the officers began to taunt and tease her while she was in the car. Because it was dark they couldn't see that we, her family, were outside our apartment just across the street witnessing this behavior. They were tapping on the window making faces at her. Misty was crying and she told them you can't treat me like this I'm a movie actress and I will use my connections to expose you. Then another officer walked up to her asked "are you a movie star? then why don't complain to George Clooney!"

"After Misty arrived at the ER we went to see her and she has a swollen jaw, black eye and scratches and bruises on her shoulder. I asked the ER staff what happened and they said Misty was brought in like that. Misty said she couldn't remember what happened but that's why she feared the police. I asked Misty to call the Auburn PD and ask to speak to the commander. When she was connected to, whom we believe was Commander Stocker she made a verbal complaint. The official asked her "what are you going to do about it?" She replied I'm doing it, I'm telling you so you do something about it." The APD official told her unless she wanted to file a formal complaint the matter would not be pursued."

The day the APD was called to do another Involuntary transport Misty left the apartment where she was staying. When we tried to follow her Auburn PD officers told us they wanted to check for inside. We told them that Misty may have walked around the side of the apartment but they made us to go back inside. They asked if we were hiding her and took time to search the apartment and get a description of what she was wearing. By the time they finished Misty was gone. We believe that if we were not otherwise occupied we may have found Misty before she got hurt."

It is a tragic that Misty slipped and fell to her death trying avoid the police, it's tragic that she did not get the proper medication to treat her mental illness from her mental health care givers at Valley Cities Mental Health, it is tragic that the Auburn PD refused to help offer to find or at least change her Missing status to "Endangered" to allow other agencies to get involved. But the real tragedy is this could have been prevented on a lot of levels."

We pleaded with the Auburn Police to help us find Misty but Commander Stocker made the decision that Misty did not fit the criteria of the Washington State Endangered Missing Persons Plan. This became a point of contention between us and the Auburn PD. In a statement he gave to the press he said Auburn PD doesn't have any evidence that Misty is actually missing. He went to say that Misty packed her belonging and left her apartment. This was an inaccurate statement."

We believe that Commander Stocker had animosity against Misty due to a previous encounter. Why else would he refuse to allow common sense to prevail? Imagine a 32 year old woman with mental illness, without her medication, imagine she left in an unstable mental state, imagine for the first time in 32 years she lost contact with everyone for 11 days. Now imagine she is Commander Stocker's daughter. Do you think this case would have been handled differently?"

Misty loved life, she had ambition, vision and a desire to make a difference in the world she lived in. She tried to use her celebrity status to influence positive change and she became a living example of that endeavor. Now press reports are saying that Auburn police department found Misty."

The truth is the Native American community formed a search party and found her after several days of searching without the help of the Auburn PD. We would like to thank the Muckleshoot Tribe and other Tribal volunteers for all their support in our time of desperation. We would like thank all the wonderful supporters who could not be here but offered kind words and prayers. A special thank you to Pastors Kenny and Charlotte Williams for opening up the Pentecostal Church for a rescue command Center and providing food, supplies to the volunteers. We will let the family and friends know about her funeral arrangement once medical examiner concludes his investigation."

Millennials Are Bad at Sewing, Laundry

Millennials might not be so great at being grown-ups, another study confirms. Researchers from the University of Missouri surveyed 502 women, and discovered that Baby Boomers reported a greater ability to sew, hem, repair buttons and clean laundry than Millennials did.

Study leader Pamela Norum said she was inspired by her own daughter to even do the study, saying, "One day when my daughter, who's in her late 20s, said to me, 'Mom, can I take my pants to a tailor to have a button sewn on?' I thought 'Are you kidding me?' That's terrible-- I really let her down." Norum says it's probably because those skills are not taught in places of formal education any more, like they used to be. She advises Millennials to go online and watch D-I-Y videos to learn basic skills.

Fewer People Are Going to Work Sick

No one wants to bring the flu home from the office, and your chances of doing so may be a bit smaller this year. Staples surveyed workers for the fifth year in a row, and found that 60 percent of people say they go to work sick. That's down from nearly 90 percent who said the same last year. Employers and employees may be figuring out that sick workers don't really do great work, as about 90 percent of managers said they encourage sick employees to stay home.

Also, more than a third of workers admitted they are half as productive as usual when they work while sick. Still, 31 percent of employees said they think their boss appreciates their presence at work, even when sick.

John Grisham Apologizes for Child Pornography Comments

Best-selling author John Grisham apologized yesterday for recent comments he made criticizing what he believed to be too harsh prison sentences for people convicted of watching child pornography. In an interview earlier this week with the British newspaper The Telegraph, Grisham said, "We have prisons now filled with guys my age -- 60-year-old white men in prison who've never harmed anybody."

He said there are men who went online one night, quote, "probably had too much to drink," and ended up on child porn websites -- something he said happened to a friend. In his apology yesterday on his website, Grisham said, "Anyone who harms a child for profit or pleasure, or who in any way participates in child pornography -- online or otherwise -- should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. My comments . . . were in no way intended to show sympathy for those convicted of sex crimes, especially the sexual molestation of children."

Computer Guesses Mood Based on How You Type

Would you want your computer to know how you feel? A new computer program has been developed that assesses a person's typing style to guess their mood. Participants simply entered their emotional state every 30 minutes while doing regular activities on the computer so the program could understand how their emotions affected their typing style.

Then they were asked to type two paragraphs from a children's book. The program was able to guess their emotions correctly 70 percent of the time and was most successful at identifying joyfulness, and least accurate at identifying sadness. It's hoped the findings could lead to the development of smarter artificial intelligence in the future.

Sandra Miniutti, chief financial officer of Charity Navigator says, "Charities don't have to disclose that specifically, and the corporations don't have to disclose it either, so there's not a good repository of information." So before you snap up a pink item be sure to read the label to try and determine if the sale will benefit a reputable charity or help in any way.

Study: You Love Your Dog Like It's a Baby

If you've ever referred to your dog as your "fur baby" you won't be surprised with the results of a new study. The data shows that women have a similar emotional response to both their pet pooch and their own child. When scanned, ladies' brains lit up primarily in the area of the brain that manages facial and visual recognition when showed a photo of their dog, and a similar response was seen when they looked at images of their children. Researchers say the slight difference in response to each photo may have to do with the evolutionary origins of each relationship-- mothers are hardwired to care for their children, and are traditionally masters to canines.

Toddlers under Two Can Recognize Anger

Small children know when you're angry at them, finds a new study. University of Washington researchers say that children as young as 15 months can detect anger when watching other people's social interactions and then use that emotional information to guide their own behavior.

Study author Betty Repacholi says, "We found that toddlers who aren't yet speaking can use visual and social cues to understand other people-- [those are] sophisticated cognitive skills for 15-month-olds. We also discovered huge individual variability, which we think will predict differences in children as they grow up and may even predict important aspects of school readiness."

Tablet Usage Linked to Shoulder Pain

Do you love using your tablet? You may want to re-think using it constantly; a new study has linked typing on a tablet with chronic shoulder problems.

Nineteen experienced typers typed on a touch-screen, desktop and notebook keyboard while electrodes measured muscle activity in their forearms and shoulders, and a sensor under each keyboard measured keystroke force. People typed faster and more accurately on the desktop and notebook keyboards compared to the touch-screen.

The touch screen keyboard was found to require less finger-muscle activity than conventional keyboards, but more shoulder-muscle activity; this is because tablet users must keep their fingers hovering above the keyboard to avoid accidentally activating the keys. While the work the back muscles are doing isn't too intense, it's thought doing it constantly could create issues over time.

Store Uses Mannequins with Visible Ribs

A New Zealand clothing store whose customers are mainly teens and young women has been slammed for having super-skinny mannequins with visible ribs, according to Yahoo! Style. But the store, Glassons, is saying it doesn't plan to remove the mannequins, despite the criticism.

Psychotherapist Anna Drijver, who specializes in eating disorders, told The New Zealand Herald, "It absolutely will have a negative effect on young women -- and young boys as well, actually. They see these images and assume that's what we should look like." Some stores in the U.S. have gotten rid of ultra-thin mannequins after being criticized, including lingerie store La Perla, which removed a mannequin that also had its ribs showing after coming under fire.

The Problem With Having a Plan-B Boyfriend or Girlfriend

Do you have a "plan-B" significant other? A recent study of college student revealed the average participant had 5.5 back burner romantic partners. The study showed that the people with plan-Bs didn't think having them affected their current relationships, but experts are now saying otherwise. Dr. Suzanne Lopez, relationship expert says, "I've seen firsthand how talking to back burners bleeds energy out of your current relationship. Having these secondary ties only weakens [a couple's] bond. Instead of becoming more intimate with your partner, you fill yourself up with someone else and your connection ceases to grow."

Sarcastic People May be Smarter

Sarcastic people may sometimes be pinned as sassy, or rude, but you should really see them as intelligent, finds a new study. Smithsonian Magazine's Richard Chin explains that sarcasm requires a series of "mental gymnastics." That is, satirical, sarcastic, or ironic statements compel the brain to "think beyond the literal meaning of the words and understand that the speaker may be thinking something entirely different."

When study participants were exposed to sarcastic and non-sarcastic statements, their brains were found to have more electrical activity when exposed to the sarcasm. The extra mental power it takes to decode sarcasm doesn't go to waste; Chin says overtime it is a good form of "mental exercise" that can "strengthen" the brain.

"Love" Hormone May Regulate Female Sexual Behavior

Women aren't always in the mood, and science may have found out what determines whether she's in the mood or not. The new study shows that the "love hormone" oxytocin may play a strong role in the regulation of female sexual behavior. The hormone is already know to promote bonding and stimulate social behaviors in people.

Scientists from The Rockefeller University genetically modified female mice so that they no longer had an oxytocin response in their brain. As a result the mice no longer approached male mice for mating when they normally would, and they even seemed to ignore male mice completely. Study author Nathaniel Heintz says, "Each study [like this] gives us more insight into how [oxytocin] might be acting in humans."

Men Are Terrible at Judging Who They Can Beat up

How much of an ego do you have? A man's perception of who he'd be able to beat up changes depending on his mood, finds a new study. Lead researcher Daniel Fessler says the study uncovered a phenomena he calls "friends shrink foes." This means when men are in a group of friends and in a good mood their ego inflates, and they feel more powerful and bigger. However, the opposite was also found-- that when men are alone or feeling vulnerable they see threats as harder to overcome.

Comedy Club Charging Patrons By the Laugh

A comedy club in Barcelona, Spain, is trying out a system of charging patrons by the laugh, according to BCC News, using facial-recognition technology to track their reactions. The facial-recognition software is in tablets that attached to the back of each seat at the comedy club, called Teatreneu. Each laugh is charged .30 euros, which is about 38 U.S. cents, with a cap for the night of 24 euros -- just over $30.

The idea of charging by the laugh was developed to counter falling audience numbers because of higher prices due to increased taxes on theater tickets. So far, attendance is up, and other comedy clubs in Spain are copying the model.

Boston Opens 113 Year Old Time Capsule... Plans New Time Capsule

One day after a 100-year-old time capsule was opened in New York City, an even older one was opened Thursday (October 9th) after having unknowingly been hidden on top of one of Boston's most famous landmarks for 113 years.

The copper box had been inside the head of a lion statute on top of the historic Old State House since 1901, where it had been forgotten until three years ago, when officials were told it might be there by the great-great-granddaughter of Samuel Rogers, a craftsman who'd worked on renovations to the early 18th century building and was believed to have placed the box in the lion's head.

When the box was opened yesterday, a red, hardcover book with no visible title or markings was on top. It and the rest of the contents weren't touched, however, since they're fragile and will have to removed and looked at in a temperature-controlled setting. But from research that was done, the box is expected to hold photos and newspaper clippings, as well as a letter to future generations from a group of Boston journalists.

The Bostonian Society, which oversees the Old State House, also plans to leave a new time capsule back in the head of the lion for the future. They've asked for suggestions on what to include, but know that one item will be a medal from the 2013 Boston Marathon, where two bombs went off at the finish line.

A Trick to Make Your Runs Seem Faster/Easier

If you're one of those people that gets up and runs every morning, kudos to you. A new study from New York University reveals that keeping your eyes focused on a target in front of you can make your run seem shorter and easier, even on an off day. When tested, participants that focused on the finish line perceived the finish to be 28 percent closer and moved 23 percent faster than those who were told to look wherever they wanted.

Study co-author Dr. Shana Cole adds, "Normally, we use visual cues in our periphery to gauge and estimate distances and depth. By focusing attention on the goal, people shut out these other cues, making the object in their central field of vision appear closer."

People Who Are Blind Have More Nightmares than Those Who Can See

You'd think not seeing some of life's horrors would somehow protect you from them, or at least from dreaming about them, but that's not the case. A new study reveals that blind people suffer from four times more nightmares than those who can see. For those with vision, about six percent of dreams are nightmares; for blind people nightmares comprise 25 percent of the dreaming experience. But why?

Researchers think that the brains of those who lack sight process stimuli differently, making questionable experiences seem more threatening. The stress of the stimuli may then get translated into nightmares, but it's not all bad news; it's thought the scary dreams may help the mind cleanse itself of the negative and confusing experiences had during the day.

Your Phone and Tablet May Make You Gain Weight

Where do you charge your phone or tablet? If it's in your bedroom you may want to move it somewhere else. A new study reveals that light from your device's screen can disrupt production of the sleep hormone melatonin and therefore cause weight gain. The devices give off blue light, the type of light most damaging to our sleep cycles.

Sleep researcher, Dr. Simon Kyle explains, saying, "If you start sleeping shorter, or receive light at the wrong time late into night, it disrupts melatonin secretion and that could contribute to alterations in metabolism." To avoid this issue, cut yourself off from using computers, phones, and tablets a few hours before going to sleep.

Men and Women Prefer Working in Single Sex Environment: But Work Best when Mixed

Are there more men or women working in your office? A new study from MIT reveals that women and men prefer to work among their own gender. Men were found to be more content if they didn't have to "walk on eggshells" around women, and women were happier not dealing with a "testosterone-filled atmosphere." Researchers looked at results from a U.S. employment survey from between 1995 and 2002.

They found that overall, single sex offices reported being happier, but offices that mixed the sexes made more money, about 41 percent more. Study co-author Dr. Sara Ellison adds, "We all think that we want to be in this pluralistic society in a diverse setting. But when push comes to shove, when our co-workers don't think like we do, that can cause some friction."

Extraordinary Experiences May Harm Your Love Life

If you just got back from the trip of a lifetime, you might want to skip telling your best friend about it. A new study reveals that having an extraordinary experience is cool, but could hurt your social life in the long run. Researchers divided 68 participants into four groups. In each group, three people watched a video of a "2-star" rated cartoon, while the fourth person watched a "3-star" rated film of a street musician.

Then the members of each group conversed, and those who watched the magician video-- the "extraordinary experience"-- said they felt excluded from the conversation. Study author Gus Cooney says, "To be extraordinary is to be different than other people, and social interaction is grounded in similarities. If an experience turns you into someone who has nothing in common with others, then no matter how good it was, it won't make you happy in the long run."

Kids Understand Familiar Voices More Than Strangers

Your kid is more likely to understand what you're saying than a stranger, honest. A new study looked at a group of kids age 7 to 12. The kids spent five days learning the voices of three German-English bilingual speaking cartoon characters, and then were asked to complete tasks told to them by six German-English speakers. Three of the speakers were the cartoon character voices the kids had been taught to recognize, while three were new to the kids.

It was found the kids were more accurately able to repeat the words spoken by the familiar voices. Study author Susannah Levi says, "This study shows that children were able to integrate knowledge of what a person sounds like and use this to their advantage. A potential benefit is that when there's background noise and kids are listening to a familiar voice, like a teacher's, kids use the familiarity to their advantage."

Binge Drinking Affects a Man's Fertility

Men who binge drink -- defined as as little as five or more drinks a week -- are more likely to have a lower sperm count and poorer sperm quality, according to a new study, with The Guardian reporting, however, that the most significant effect was seen in those who had more than 25 drinks per week. While there's no need for men who want to be fathers to give up drinking altogether, the study authors advised, "Young men should be advised to avoid habitual alcohol intake."

First Impressions Are More Important Than We Thought

You might really think you have someone figured out in the first few seconds of meeting them, finds a new study. We all know we make snap judgment about people based on their personality, interests, or how they look, but the new findings indicate that we make these judgments without really thinking.

Australian researchers monitored the brain waves of participants as they showed them various pictures twice, and after the second time they were asked questions about each image. Study author Dr. Stefan Bode says, "We have found that brain activity when looking at images can encode judgments such as time reference, even when the viewer is not aware of making such judgments. Moreover, our results suggest that certain images can prompt a person to think about the present or the future." It's thought that these snap judgments are what lead people to act impulsively.
