Your Conversations with Siri Are NOT Private

When you talk to or yell at Siri, do you think it’s just a private conversation? Turns out, there’s a heavy breather listening in. Last week, a Redditor who goes by the username FallenMyst posted that he’s working for a company that actually reviews audio recordings from voice-powered services. Not only Siri, but also Google Now and Cortan. FallenMyst says she gives performance feedback on what can be improved. Whether this angers you or not, the fact is that your voice IS being recorded when you use a service like Siri.

In Apple’s privacy policy, for example, the company tells users “When you use Siri and Dictation the things you say and dictate will be recorded and sent to Apple to process your requests.” The policy goes on to say that Apple will also receive your name, nickname, and the names of people you know; the songs in your collection and other information.

Google admits the same thing in their support page for Voice and Audio activity. Third party companies such as CrowdFlower pay people to review audio recordings to ensure analyze the translation jobs. Does this make you vulnerable? Or is it just improving the service?

Our Ancestors Couldn't See Blue?

Just as #thedress fiasco was about to die... comes this new relevant story.

New research suggests our ancestors may not have been able to see the color blue. Remember "The Odyssey?" Well, Greek poet Homer famously describes the sea as "wine-dark." But that's not all; there is also no mention of blue in the Koran, ancient Chinese stories, or in an ancient Hebrew version of the bible.

Egyptians were the only culture that produced blue dyes, and were the first ancient civilization to have a word for the color blue. Today, the Himba people in Namibia still don't have a word for the color blue, but have several different words for green. A recent study in Russia also focused on how Russian speakers have separate words for light blue and dark blue. It seems that while colors may be the same around the world, the language in which they are described has an impact on how they are perceived.

Are Humans Getting Smarter?

If you had to make a guess, would you say humans are getting smarter overall, or dumber? Believe it or not, a new study reveals we're actually getting smarter. Researchers reviewed IQ tests from the past few decades and discovered though the tests were getting harder, people were doing just as well. Since 1950, it was found the average IQ score had risen by 20 points. As for why we're getting smarter-- it's most likely due to improved education, increased exposure to testing, improved medical care, better nutrition, and decreased family size.

Bobby Brown SLAMS Reality TV Rumors

Bobby Brown has shut down rumors that his family is currently shooting a reality show, while his daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown is fighting for her life. Bobby's attorney Christopher Brown of Brown & Y Rosen LLC told RumorFix, "Yet again, TMZ has chosen to engage in false news reporting. There is no Brown family reality show that is in production which chronicles Bobby Brown, Bobbi Kristina or the medical emergency she presently faces at Emory Hospital. These reports are irresponsible and Warner Brothers as the owner of TMZ, should be ashamed to publish such nonsense, particularly one day before Bobbi Kristina's birthday."

Brown added, "Bobbi Kristina and Bobby Brown are dealing with enough right now. The fact that TMZ/Warner Brothers has decided to inject negativity into their lives at this critical time is plain insanity."

Bobby's wife Alicia Etheridge told the site that Bobby's siblings did shoot a reality show, but "this is a long time ago" and it is not currently attached to a network.

  • Bobby himself said in a statement, "We continue to request privacy in regards to my daughter's medical condition. We thank everyone that supports Bobbi Kristina and God is hearing our prayers."
  • Meanwhile, today (March 4th) is Bobbi Kristina's 22nd birthday.

Doctors: Parents, Don't Delay Vaccines!

The debate over vaccines seems to grow fiercer each day, but a new study addresses the increasing issue of parents pressuring doctors to delay vaccines for young children. Researchers from the University of Colorado surveyed 534 doctors across the U.S. and 93 percent reported they had received requests for vaccines to be rescheduled.

Some parents did this because they were worried about possible vaccine-related neurological complications, while others just wanted their child to receive fewer shots in the same day. Seventy five percent of doctors said they agreed to the vaccine delays at least some of the time, even though they knew it was potentially harmful. Some cited patient trust as a reason for giving in to the request. The CDC notes that vaccine schedules are based on research around what time they will be most effective at preventing disease.

Animal Testing INCREASED over the Years

Should animals be used for testing our human products and medications? It's a hotly debated topic. A new study published in the Journal of Medical Ethics shows there was a 73 percent increase in animal testing from 1997 to 2012. It's thought the sharp rise may have something to do with which animals are federally regulated and which animals are not, making data on the actual prevalence of testing across species harder to come by. Currently, animals with charisma and likeness similar to humans (dogs, cats and chimpanzees are a few) are regulated, while animals like mice, rats and bird-- which make up about 98.8 percent of animals in the lab-- are not. Spokesperson for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Sandy Walsh, who was not involved in the study says, "There are still many areas where animal testing is necessary and non-animal testing is not yet a scientifically valid and available option. However, FDA has supported efforts to reduce animals testing."

Study: Sleeping over 8 Hours Bad for You

You really can have too much of a good thing. A new study reveals sleeping more than eight hours a night may be bad for your health. Researchers analyzed the sleep patterns of nearly 10,000 U.K. residents ages 42 to 81 and followed up for nearly a decade afterwards. They discovered that older adults who slept more than eight hours a night were 46 percent more likely to suffer a stroke than adults who slept only six to eight hours. Interestingly, the risk of stroke was four times higher when people transitioned from sleeping less than six hours at the beginning of the study to more than eight hours as the years passed. Researchers still caution that it remains unclear whether longer sleep duration is a symptom or cause of stroke risk.

Jennifer Lawrence Shoots down Feud Rumors with Director

Jennifer Lawrence, who won an Oscar and was nominated for another for the past two David O. On Facebook, Lawrence put those rumors to rest:

"David O. Russell is one of my closest friends and we have an amazing collaborative working relationship. I adore this man and he does not deserve this tabloid malarkey."

Kylie Jenner Not Worried about Being a Good Role Model

17-year-old Kylie Jenner feels the pressure of being in the spotlight but doesn't let herself worry about being a role model. She explains in the new issue of Flaunt magazine, "I never feel pressure to be a good role model. I always try to do my best to inspire people to be good and do the right thing, but I just can't live my life always trying to be a good role model. I try to be the best I can be, but it's hard sometimes. We're all human. I just like to live each day and just be me and be real. I definitely always feel pressure to act a certain way, but I try my best not to let it affect me -- although there are times where I'm not totally myself because of that. Even at the mall I feel like I can't totally be myself. When I'm not in public, I try to always be with my friends, so I can totally be myself and not have to worry about people judging or watching."

Study Shows Cost of after-Work Emails

When work follows you home, it can take a significant toll, researchers say. They looked at a week in the lives of 341 people as they received communications outside of work hours—facing, in the words of Texas A&M researcher Wendy Boswell, "a new night shift." Subjects "became angry when they received a work email or text after they had gone home and that communication was negatively worded or required a lot of the person's time," says Boswell collaborator Marcus Butts, of the University of Texas at Arlington, in a press release.

That was a particular problem when the email came from a supervisor, since workers, seeking approval, "have no course of action other than to acquiesce to their supervisor's demands," MainStreet reports. Such communications especially bothersome for people described as "segmentors"—those who try to keep their work very separate from the rest of their lives.

Lupita Nyong'o's Stolen Oscar Dress Returned... Rumored to be Fake

Lupita Nyong'o's stolen Oscar dress was returned to her because the thief allegedly found out it was worthless. The unidentified culprit told TMZ that he stole the Calvin Klein gown, reported to be worth between $150,000 to $10 million, but returned it by leaving it in a garment bag inside of a garbage bag in the hotel bathroom after getting it appraised. The thief claims he got away with the crime by dropping the dress from the balcony of the hotel room and having his friend pick it up.

  • The thief removed two of the 6,000 pearls from the dress which is how they found out it was a fake. A source close to CK designer Francisco Costa told the website, "Did anyone ever say they were real from Calvin Klein? I always assumed everyone knew they were fake, but I guess not. Do they really make dresses out of real jewels since Cleopatra died?"
  • Lupita told Women's Wear Daily, "I'm happy that it has been potentially recovered. It's a timeless and priceless piece of art."
  • A rep for the clothing brand said in a statement, "All of us at Calvin Klein are thrilled to know that the dress has potentially been located. This was an amazing collaboration between the brand and Lupita and the dress looked truly exquisite on her. Once it's returned to us, we will be able to have the dress restored and archived, as it now represents an important moment for the brand."

WHO says a review of data from middle- and high-income countries shows that nearly half of 12 to 35-year-olds listen to music at unsafe volumes on their personal audio devices or cellphones. Additionally, about 40 percent of teens and young adults are exposed to damaging levels of sound at nightclubs, bars and sporting events. WHO says volumes above 85 decibels for eight hours or 100 decibels for 15 minutes are unsafe.

Dogs & Most Other Animals Have Very Short-Term Memory

You dog probably already forgot about that treat you just gave him. Animals are known to have two types of memory, short-term and longer-term "specialized" memories. And while animals are known for having excellent specialized memory, memories of specific events tend to disappear in a span "ranging form a few seconds to several minutes." A new analysis of previous studies reveals birds, mammals and bees all have an average short-term memory duration of just 27 seconds. Dogs remember for about two minutes, while chimps' short term memory only lasts 20 seconds, and for rats it's even shorter. Similar studies on humans have shown we can remember comparable information as long as two days. Researchers remark, "We think humans' ability to remember arbitrary events is unique."

Taylor Swift Says She'll Be Single Until She's 30

Taylor Swift thinks that she'll be single until she's 30-years-old. During a recent interview with The Telegraph, Taylor revealed where she sees herself in five years, saying, "I'll probably still be single, let's be honest. No one's going to sign up for this and everything that goes with it. Like, 'Hi, nice to meet you, want a date? Do you love camera flashes? I hope you do!' I don't know what's going to happen if I'm ever content in a relationship — no idea how that's going to work. I don't even know if that's possible with the life I have."

Taylor then spoke of herself in third person and said, "In five years' time she'll be so afraid of everything, she doesn't leave her house. She's just surrounded by cats. So many cats, they've divided themselves up into armies and she wanders around lint-rolling the couch that no one's going to sit on because she's afraid to have people over."

  • And if Taylor finds love, she says, "If that does happen, I think I could find complexity in happiness. I don't think anything's ever simple. Just because you're happy in a relationship doesn't mean that there aren't moments of confusion or frustration or loneliness or sadness. Hopefully, if I ever find some sort of meaningful relationship, I'll be able to still find inspiration, just through the everyday ups and downs.
  • She added, "I used to think it was important to find a boyfriend. But I don't feel that it is now. I just want to have as much fun and as many adventures as possible."

Mumford & Sons Hint Big Announcement Today

Mumford & Sons posted a brief video online late last week of the band in a rehearsal studio, hinting that a big announcement is coming on March 2nd. According to FMQB, the group is most likely to reveal the title and release date of its third studio album. The British quartet has been on hiatus since September 2013, after completing the touring cycle for their mammoth sophomore album, Babel.

Babel debuted at Number One on the Billboard album chart and stayed there for three weeks. The multi-platinum disc was named Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards in February 2013.

  • Babel sold 600,000 copies in its first week of release back in September 2012 and went on to sell more than two million copies.
  • Mumford & Sons stayed largely out of sight during its break, with only frontman Marcus Mumford briefly surfacing to work on the soundtrack for the movie Inside Llewyn Davis.
  • The band is confirmed to headline the 2015 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. The 14th annual four-day camping and music festival will be held from June 11th through the 14th in Manchester, Tennessee, 60 miles south of Nashville. Other headliners include Billy Joel, Florence And The Machine, Deadmau5, Robert Plant, My Morning Jacket and many more.

What Age Men and Women Find Each other Most Attractive

What age group do you go after? After analyzing the profiles of daters on OKCupid and OKTrends, researchers have created graphs indicating how our tastes in partners changes as we age. Study leader Christian Rudder says, "Women who are, say, 28 find guys who are also 28 about the most attractive, and so forth. Up until about 40, when that's getting too old." Not surprisingly, the findings reveal men at all ages find women at age 20 most attractive.

To that, Rudder comments, "From the time you're 22 you'll be less hot than a 20-year-old, based on this data. So that's just a thing. It is kind of terrible."
