Coffee Tastes Gritty? It May Have Dirt in It...

Ever think that morning cup of joe tastes gritty? There might be some dirt in there, according to a new report. Due to recent coffee shortages, producers may be turning to finely ground fillers such as wood, husks, whole coffee berries, and even clumps of Earth to compensate for the lost beans.

Study leader Suzana Nixdorf says, "Normal people can't taste the difference," and that other common fillers include corn, soybeans, and brown sugar. She says she's developed a test to determine if coffee is pure or not. She adds, "I hope the industry will [use] this method to really guarantee quality without using fillers."
