Fitness Tracker Gives Electric Shock If You Slack off

A new fitness band that's due out next year uses pain to help keep the wearer on track, delivering an electric shock whenever a goal is missed. Prevention says the Pavlok band delivers 340 volts of electricity, which founder and CEO Maneesh Sethi says compares to the static electric shock you feel when you touch a metal doorknob.

You first set a goal on the Pavlok, such as going to the gym every day, and if you live up to your goal, you're rewarded with things like money or a gift card or a free month at a gym. But if you miss going one day, you owe money to another user or you get zapped. Sethi says the goal is to reinforce good habits and punish bad ones to try to get rid of them.

Before he came up with the idea for the Pavlok, Sethi had an even more unusual way to help keep him accountable, with Prevention saying he hired a woman to slap him in the face every time he logged on to Facebook.

Night Owls and Early Birds Have Different Personality Traits

When you prefer to sleep can affect your personality and quality of life. Researchers looked at the lifestyle and personality traits of 700 students between the ages of 18 and 32. They found that early birds tended to be more persistent, and resistant to fatigue, frustration and difficulties. Night owls were found to be more extravagant, temperamental, impulsive and novelty-seeking.

Night owls were also found to be more likely to develop addictive behaviors, mental disorders and more likely to suffer from insomnia and ADHD. The differences may be due to genes, which can determine a person's circadian rhythm, or due to "social jet lag." The term is used to describe the lack of synchronization which can happen between a person's biological clock and society around them.

Digital Tatoos Are Now a Thing

Soon you may be able to unlock your phone by simply tapping it against your arm. Motorola has created digital, waterproof tattoos, each about the size of a nickle, that stick to a person's wrist or other body part. Circuits in the patch are linked to the phone, which then allows a user to unlock their phone by simply holding it near their body.

The tattoos are made of thin, flexible plastic and stick to the skin with medical-grade adhesive. Creators say the tattoos can survive "showering, swimming and vigorous activities" and last up to five days.

How Much Money Attractive People Earn

It pays to be attractive. An analysis of several studies finds that pretty people stand to make 230 thousand dollars more in their lifetime than more average looking folks. The advantages apparently start at infancy, when cuter babies receive more attention from strangers and their parents. Also, in school teachers form higher expectations for attractive students, and they tend to get slightly higher grades.

When a pretty person is old enough to begin job hunting, hiring managers are more likely to hire them compared to unattractive applicants with the same resume. However, it's not all good news for the beautiful-- economist Daniel Hamermesh says that people rated as "very attractive" are "significantly and substantially more likely to have committed robbery, theft, or assault than were other youths."

We Start Thinking about Our Health at Age 36

Do you take good care of yourself? A new study reveals we start taking our health seriously at age 36. Researchers spoke with 2,000 people and found that 56 percent admitted to deliberately ignoring health warnings and having a "live for the moment" approach to life. However, over 33 percent said they had a shocking moment by age 36 that made them re-think their lifestyle.

The top five wake-up call moments for people were: getting older, having a health scare, having a close relative die, receiving a warning from a doctor, and seeing a shocking, unflattering photo of themselves.

Researcher Rob Anderson says, "These findings show that by our mid-thirties, health and well-being become a much bigger priority. Simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference and reassessing how we live our lives, and the value we place on healthcare, can mean huge long-term benefits."

Saying, "Um," "Uh," and "Like" a Lot Means You Are a Thoughtful Person

If you tend to use "filler words" such as "you know," "um," "like" or "I mean" when you speak, a new study suggests that's because you're a thoughtful, conscientious person who cares about the truthfulness of your speech. The University of Texas research says that people who use these filler words are letting you know that instead of telling you the exact truth about something, details have been removed either because they can't remember exactly or the details aren't really important.

They also found that the filler words were more common among people who are conscientious, more likely to be empathetic and care about the listener. The researchers believe the reason is that these type of people are, quote, "generally more thoughtful and aware of themselves and their surroundings," and their use of the filler words show they have a, quote, "desire to share or rephrase opinions to recipients."

Americans Today Have Better Experience Losing Their Virginity than 25 Years Ago

Losing your virginity is certainly one of life's more memorable moments. The results of a new study show that Americans losing their virginity today are having better experiences than those doing the same 20 to 30 years ago. Researchers questioned over five thousand people at a Midwestern U.S. university over a 23-year period.

Men were found to feel less anxious about their performance compared to men 20 years ago, and women were found to feel less guilty about their first time. Lead researcher Susan Sprecher says the results suggest virginity loss today is not as big of a deal as it was 20 to 30 years ago. Also, first-timers today were found to be more likely to be in a relationship than those a few years ago. Sprecher says this indicates that intimacy is likely to have increased gradually and "so [may] explain why women's pleasure was found to increase over time and their guilt to decrease."

NYC Okays Luxury Building with "Poor Door" Entrance

New York City's Department of Housing Preservation and Development has approved plans for a new luxury apartment building that will have a separate apartment for poorer residents, dubbed a "poor door" by critics. The New York Post reports that approval was finally given this month, after real estate developer Extell first unveiled plans for the 33-story building on Manhattan's Upper West Side last August. In order to get millions of dollars in tax breaks, Extell is including 55 units of affordable housing in the building.

But the company designed it so that the residents of those units will have a separate entrance and separate elevators than those who live in the 219 luxury apartments. Among the critics of the "poor door" is state Assemblywoman Linda B. Rosenthal, who represents the neighborhood, who said the arrangement is, quote, "abominable and has no place in the 21st century."

The Claim That We Use 10% of Our Brains Is a Myth

Who hasn't heard the myth that we use just ten percent of our brains? The Atlantic reports that the idea may date back to psychologist William James who wrote in 1907 that we use "only a small part of our possible mental and physical resources."

Scientists today say that the brain is packed with living neurons that are always doing something, and those brain scans showing only a small part of the brain lit up may confuse people. One neuroscience professor points out those scans are designed to show only the brain's major activities, not all of the brain's activities.

Why You Are Facebook Friends with Your Enemy

Are you Facebook friends with anyone you dislike in real life? If so, you're in the majority. A poll of nearly three-thousand U.S. adult Facebook users reveals that 68 percent of respondents admitted they have Facebook friends they do not like. But why would they want those they dislike as "friends"? Sixty-nine percent say it's because they want to know what their "frenemy" is up to, while 57 percent say it's because they're family or a loved one's family member.

Other reasons: they're a colleague or former colleague, they'd cause a scene if they were deleted as a friend, and having them as a friend lets me see what others are doing. The average poll taker had 671 Facebook friends, and admits that they consider just an average of 18 of those digital friends true friends.

Family Dog Saves Deaf Teen from Burning Home

A pit bull has been credited with saving the life of a deaf teenager who was asleep when his Indianapolis home caught fire. According to the Indianapolis Star, as smoke began to fill the house last Wednesday (July 16th), 13-year-old Nick Lamb didn't hear the alarm because he was sleeping without his cochlear implants in.

That's when Ace -- the family's two-year-old pit bull -- sprang into action, going into Nick's room and licking his face repeatedly until the teen woke up. The rest of the family were away at the time of the fire, but Nick's mother credits Ace with saving her son. She said, "Pit bulls get bad reps, he loves his family. If it wasn't for him, I could have lost my little boy."

Nick added, "He saved my life. I love him a lot more." The house was damaged badly, but firefighters were also able to rescue the family's cat, Pixie.

The Science of Nostalgia

It's easy to look back and get caught up in the nostalgia of childhood. Everything just seemed easier back then. However, researcher Alan Hirsch says nostalgia is "a longing for a sanitized impression of the past, what in psychoanalysis is referred to as a screen memory-- not a true recreation of the past, but rather a combination of many different memories, all integrated together, and in the process all negative emotions filtered out."

Hirsch also points out that nostalgia does not relate to a specific memory, but rather an emotional state. Psychologist Erica Hepper says that the usefulness of nostalgia varies with age, with young adults participating in it most. Once we hit middle age and older we tend to have a decline in nostalgic thoughts.

Morning People More Likely to Lie at Night

The early bird may catch the worm, but that that doesn't mean everyone likes to get up early. A new study finds that early birds and night owls are more likely to be dishonest when awake at un-preferred hours.

The researchers looked at 200 people and found that across the board, early birds were more likely to be dishonest at night, and night owls were more likely to lie in the mornings. The results could be relevant for companies that have workers on odd shifts. Also, researchers note the findings "cast doubt on the stereotype that evening people are somehow [self-indulgent.]"

The top secret purchases of respondents were: nights out (64%), fashion and beauty items (46%),and leisure activities (22%).

Eighty four percent of respondents said the top reason for keeping their spending a secret was to avoid an argument, while 42 percent said it was so they wouldn't cause unnecessary worry. Fifty-four percent of men say they've been caught hiding their spending, while just 34 percent of women said the same.

Jason Biggs Makes Big Mistake Tweeting Jokes about Downed Malaysian Plane

Jason Biggs found himself in hot water after posting insensitive jokes about the Malaysia Airlines plane crash on Twitter. He did tweet a four-part apology that said he didn't intend to offend people, he then admits some people did find those tweets pretty offensive, and that he's sad and angry about the entire tragedy… he then clarifies that no one made him apologize…. But then again, joking about selling your Malaysian airlines frequent flier miles…how could you NOT think you were going to offend people? So what do you think? Is he sorry, or only sorry that he got caught?

New Earthquake Map Released

The U.S. Geological Survey has released its new map showing which areas of the country are mostly likely to experience a significant earthquake in the next 50 years. Its updated National Seismic Hazard Map shows that 16 states are a high risk: Alaska; Arkansas; California; Hawaii; Idaho; Illinois; Kentucky; Missouri; Montana; Nevada; Oregon; South Carolina; Tennessee; Utah; Washington; and Wyoming. The risk map doesn't include any data on quakes that could be related to fracking, even while the USGS says the process might be responsible for a significant increase in earthquakes in places like Oklahoma.

The agency said it hopes to use the data in future maps, but explained that it's harder to include because fracking-related earthquake may not behave like natural quakes and their rates change based on man-made activity.

How Much Does an Affair Cost?

Sneaking around can sure get pricey. A poll of nearly three thousand married U.S. couples finds that about 25 percent admit to having cheated on their spouses. Of the cheaters, just 33 percent said their partner noticed a shift in the family's finances. On average, an affair was found to cost 444 dollars a month, with most lasting six months.

That average includes dinner tabs, hotel costs, and gifts associated with the affair. Clinical psychologist Ramani Durvasula says that affair can of course cost much more, saying, "Secret cell phones, airline tickets, secret credit cards, hotel rooms-- the costs can be astronomical." Many experts say with social media it's easier for people to cheat today than ever before.

Teen Summer Employment Going Extinct

It's used to be common for teenagers to have a summer job, but it looks like it's increasingly becoming a thing of the past. The financial website NerdWallet says that while a generation ago, some 75 percent of teens had a summer job, Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that it's now down around 40 percent for 16-to-19-year-olds, the continuation of a decades-long trend. What's the reason for the decline? NerdWallet says that part of it is that the kind of jobs available for teens is shrinking as older workers are taking fast food and retail store jobs amid the loss of low-skilled factory jobs and underemployment.

Another factor likely is that more students are going to summer school, involved in extracurricular activities and volunteering. But it could be that they just don't want to work, with recruiting firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas saying the number of teens who don't want to work is steadily increasing, partly because some don't want to work in minimum-wage jobs.

These teens could be hurting themselves down the line, however, as a recent Drexel University study found that job experience in high school boosts future income by 20 percent to 25 percent a decade later.

Market research company Euromonitor International says that tea-drinking Asian and Pacific nations prefer instant coffee while coffee-drinkers in the Western Hemisphere prefer fresh coffee.

However there are exceptions, for example in Mexico people view instant coffee as the more convenient and affordable option despite the country's proximity to premium coffee growing regions. See how the world's preferences break down in the map below.

Think Twice Before Posting A Sexy Selfie

Posting a suggestive selfie may not be the best idea for women. Psychologists showed 120 female volunteers two Facebook profiles for a made-up woman named Amanda. The profiles were identical except for the profile photos. In one profile she was scantily clad and in the other she was dressed conservatively.

Researchers ask the volunteers to rate each profile in three areas: attractiveness, if she'd be a good friend, and if she'd be a capable worker. They found that Amanda's non-sexy profile scored highly across all categories while her sexy profile scored much lower. Researcher Elizabeth Daniels says, "There is so much pressure on teen girls and young women to portray themselves as sexy, but sharing those sexy photos online may have more negative consequences than positive." Her advice? "Showcase identity rather than appearance."

Friends Share Same DNA

How do you choose your friends? A new study finds that many people unknowingly choose friends who have some DNA sequences in common with them. Researchers compared gene variation between nearly two thousand people who were not biologically related and found that friends had more gene variations in common than strangers.

Researcher Nicholas Christakis says, "Most people don't even know who their fourth cousins are, yet we are somehow, among a myriad of possibilities, managing to select as friends the people who resemble our kin." Christakis says it makes sense, because the usefulness of a speech gene, for example, would depend on whether a friend shared the same gene, so there's an advantage to people's genes evolving at the same rate as their friends.

Men More Likely to Brag than Women

Do you consider yourself cocky? A new study reveals that men are more likely to brag about their talents and hide their shortcomings compared to women. A survey of ten men revealed that seven confessed to boasting about their strengths, and five admitted to lying about having skills in certain areas. Nearly 50 percent of the men said they brag in order to boost their confidence, with 42 percent saying they lie about their abilities to make themselves look good.

Psychologist Cary Cooper says it's because men are conditioned to be more competitive than women and feel a greater need to impress others, and that the behavior may also be used to impress members of the opposite sex.

Buisnesses Run by Female CEOs Do Better in Stocks

A new study from Fortune magazine found that companies that are run by female CEOs had better stock market returns than those run by men. The data showed that Fortune 1000 companies with female CEOs have an average return of 103.4 percent over the course of the female leader's tenures, compared to an average 69.5 percent return for the S&P 500 Index, which looks at the combined performance of the largest companies on the market.

The study didn't give a reason for the difference, but the International Journal of Business Governance and Ethics found that female leaders were more likely to use, quote, "cooperation, collaboration and consensus-building more often" to make choices.

Science Creates Color Darker than Black

There is now a color so dark that our eyes can't see, darker than regular black. A British company created the coating and says that it absorbs 99.96 percent of light, which is the full amount of light the human eye can detect.

The coating is named Vantablack, and creator Ben Jensen says if you created a dress out of it "you would lose all features of the dress. It would just be something black passing through." The super black coating is made out of "very expensive" carbon nanotubes that are ten thousand times thinner than a human hair and ten times stronger than steel.

Cell Phones Slowing Restaurant Service

Do you think it's polite to use your cell phone in a restaurant? Apparently lots of people do, to the point where it's slowing down service. An anonymous manager at a busy New York City restaurant says that cell phones prevent customers from ordering as quickly as they used to.

After comparing security footage from 2004 with current footage, the restauranteur claims that 10 years ago customers spent an average of one hour and five minutes at their table, but in 2014 the average time jumped to an hour and fifty-five minutes.

The anonymous post on the Craigslist "rants & raves" board says that customers are so preoccupied taking photos, checking social media, and complaining about WiFi connections that take longer to order and to eat. The post end reads, "We are grateful for everyone who comes into our restaurant, after all, there are so many choices out there. But can you please be a bit more considerate?"

The Internet Affects Who You Find Attractive

The amount of time you spend online affects you more than you think. A new study reveals that women who spend a lot of time online prefer more masculine looking men, while men prefer more feminine, thinner women. When people from El Salvador, which has few people with internet access, were asked to choose photos of the most attractive faces they were more likely to name feminine men and masculine, heavier women as more attractive.

Study leader Carlota Batres explains the differences in preference, saying, "People with internet access are more exposed to the media, which promotes the beauty ideals of muscly men and thin, feminine women. Our findings are also consistent with previous literature that has found that heavier figures are considered more attractive in poorer and rural areas."

'Boring' TV Makes You Eat More

Swedish researchers studied 18 women as they snacked and watched different types of TV shows. Women who watched "boring" TV were found to consume 52 percent more food than those who watched "engaging" TV.

But why does "boring" equal more eating? Cornell researcher Aner Tal, says, "At very low levels of engagement, you kind of eat to engage yourself because you're bored."

Young Girl Believed to be Cured of HIV Relapses

A four-year-old Mississippi girl who was believed to have been cured of HIV has relapsed, showing detectable levels of the virus, federal officials said Thursday (July 10th) in a blow to the anti-HIV fight. The girl had been been off antiretroviral drug therapy for more than two years, and doctors had believed she could be a model for wiping out the virus in babies born with it.

The girl was given anti-AIDS therapy nearly immediately after her birth and continued treatment for months. But after the girl missed several treatment appointments, doctors found she was still HIV-free, leading them to believe the early treatment may have eliminated the virus.

Healthy Habits DO Mean Longer Life

If you keep your vices to a minimum you really can live longer, that's according to a new study. German researchers studied over 16 thousand people aged 16 to 90 until they died to determine what a healthy lifestyle looks like.

It was found that smokers have a 57 percent higher risk of dying prematurely, and people who smoke, drink, ear poorly and do little exercise have an early death risk that's two and a half times higher than someone who refrains from bad habits. They also found that the impact of an unhealthy lifestyle worsens as a person ages.

What Men Are Like in the 10 Big Cities

What are the men like in your area? The app Lulu, which women used to review and read about men they know, has broken down what the men are like in ten different U.S. cities. The women chose from a list of hashtag choices to describe the guy they were reviewing. For example men in Chicago were described most often as "#GreatHair" and "#HoldsHisLiquor." While the results are not at all scientific they are still entertaining. Check them out on the map below.

J. Crew Introduces Size XXX Small

Clothing store J. Crew is getting some buzz this week. The store has apparently introduced size XXXS or 000 (triple zero). The size fits someone with a waist measuring just 23 inches. The company claims the size was created to fit customers in Asia. Some bloggers have criticized the tiny size, saying it's part of the "vanity sizing" trend of duping customers into thinking they are wearing smaller sizes.

Still, others say it's a great business move. Jennifer Black, retail expert applauds the move, saying, "We feel like the retailers in general never make enough small sizes. What stocks out first when an item is hot are sizes 0 to 4." Black also says it's unlikely this is a case of vanity sizing.

Why People Risk Their Lives over a Smartphone

It's not uncommon to hear of people risking their lives to save their smartphone. But why do people do people jump onto to train tracks or a frozen river just to get a phone? Psychologist Dr. Bryan Reuther explains, saying, "Although the cost of these devices is likely a factor in an attempted rescue or protection, it perhaps goes beyond that."

It's because smartphones bring together so many parts of our lives, and some people begin to see the devices as representations of the bond to the people they use it to communicate with. Reuther adds, "We become attached to this technology because of our reliance on it, and in a way these devices become part of us. Without them, we may get anxious or upset or even feel disconnected."

An Hour of Exercise Makes up a Day of Sitting

Add another study to the growing list of those that show sitting is bad for us, with new research on heart health from UT Southwestern Medical Center showing that sitting was linked to lower heart fitness. The good news, however, was that it also found that since exercise has a more powerful effect in helping the heart than sitting does in harming it, one hour of exercise can counteract the effects of sitting for six to seven hours a day.

Men Become 'Invisible' to Younger Women at Age 39

Youth certainly is fleeting. A new survey finds that men start to become sexually "invisible" to younger women once they hit age 39. When polled, 62 percent of women said they assume that most men in their late 30s are taken and not worth approaching. Fifty-four percent of all respondents said that the number one sign a man had become "invisible" was that women no longer check him out at the bar. Other signs a man is aging out of the dating game: having a double chin, flecks of grey hair, thinning hair and bad teeth.

4 in 10 American Households Don't Have Landlines

Four out of 10 American households now don't have landlines, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study, twice the rate from five years ago. However, the pace of people giving up their landlines and going cellphone-only, which had been rising by about five percentage points annually, has slowed in recent years, and last year it only went up 3 percentage points to 41 percent of American homes. The study also found:
  • About 9 percent of homes only have a landline, 48 percent have both a landline and cellphones, and 3 percent have neither.
  • Nearly two-thirds of people in their late 20s live in households with only cellphones, but only 14 percent of people 65 and older do.
  • Poor adults are much more likely than higher-income people to have only cellphones.

Kids With Same Sex Parents Better off

Families with same-sex parents are becoming more and more common, and a new study reveals kids thrive with two moms or two dads. Three-hundred-fifteen same-sex parents were interviewed and it was revealed their families had higher levels of health and cohesion than in the general population by about six percent.

Australian researchers say this is mostly because the children of same-sex parents are less influenced by gender stereotypes. However, Roslyn Phillips with Family Voice Australia downplayed the results, saying a more effective study would look at the adult children of same-sex couples.

People Would Rather Endure Pain Than Be Left with Their Own Thoughts

When was the last time you simply sat in a quiet room to think? New data reveals people really don't like the idea of sitting idle. In eleven studies researchers had participants spend up to 15 minutes in a room by themselves with nothing to do except think. When participants were given the option of receiving an electric shock or simply sitting in the quiet room, they overwhelmingly chose the pain.

Sixty-seven percent of male participants in one study shocked themselves at least one time during the thinking period, and on average, study participants gave themselves 1.47 shocks in a 15-minute interval. But why? One researcher states, "When left alone with their thoughts, participants focused on their own shortcomings and got caught in ruminative thought cycles."

Dogs Communicate With Their Eyes

They say the eyes are the window to the soul, and apparently the same can be said of dogs. New data from Japan reveals that wolves and dogs are capable of communicating using only their eyes. Researchers compared the characteristics of the face and eyes among 25 different types of canines.

They found that species with the most striking eyes tended to live and hunt in groups, where eye-based communication was needed to bring down large prey. Species with camouflaged eyes were more likely to live alone or in pairs, where communication may not be needed as much. Previous studies have shown that domestic dogs are more likely to make direct eye contact with humans than wolves raised in the same setting. This suggests that dogs are more in tune with humans, and see humans as "socially useful."

A recent study in Japan found that eye shape, iris colour and facial markings in canines are part of an intricate eye-based communication system that humans do not yet fully understand. Pictured are areas of the creatures' face that researchers studied

New App To Help Keep Your Pet Safe on July 4th

Is your dog terrified of the sound of fireworks? It's not an uncommon fear among pets, the ASPCA says that nearly one in five lost pets goes missing after being scared by the sound of fireworks. In an effort to help pet owners keep their pets safe for the Fourth of July, the non-profit has released an app.

The app offers a personalized recovery kit with step-by-step instructions on how to search for a lost animal under various scenarios. Another feature of the app allows the user to upload photos and medical records to create a digital "lost pet" flyer that can be shared across social media networks in the event of an emergency.

Harrison Ford Using Hands-Free Crutches

Harrison Ford is adjusting well to using a crutch. The actor did break his leg while filming Star Wars VII. So, this crutch is a special fitted crutch called the iWalk. Harrison opted for it since he wants to keep on moving. When you use regular crutches, your muscles atrophy on the leg not being used and, to him, is a passive way to recover. He wanted an active recovery.

Jewel Announces Divorce

Jewel and her hubby of six years, Try Murray, are no more. The two made their divorce public yesterday. It looks to be another unconscious uncoupling, given the explanation Jewel wrote on her website. She says the two are now going to spend some time apart as they both need to grow as people. Apparently being together stunted said growth.

Shakespeare to Blame for Our Obsession with Clear Skin?

Shakespeare had no problem describing a character's physical flaws in an insulting manner, and now Shakespeare is being blamed for creating a stigma against those suffering with skin diseases. British researchers analyzed Shakespeare's language and found it reflected the Elizabethan obsession with perfect, unmarked, pale skin.

It's probably because at the time, London was a "melting pot of diseases," many of which produced sores on the skin. Researcher Nina Goad says, "It is interesting to note that much of the Elizabethan stigma over disfiguring skin disease still persists today. Over the last few decades dermatologists have tried to address the effect this can have on patients. Even now, examples exist in films and literature where visible disfigurements are used to represent villainy or malice."

"You're Blaming Shakespeare For What Now?!" the blog Shakespeare Geek scoffs. "In other news, Shakespeare's popularity is also responsible for cross-dressing, bed-tricks and the occasional regicide."

Attractive People Less Likely to Get Sick

Beautiful people seem to have several advantages in life, and science has just uncovered one more-- pretty people are less likely to get sick. U.S. researchers studied 15 thousand men and women for years, and found that the more physically attractive each participant was rated, the less likely they were to suffer from a wide range of health problems. The researchers say the findings reflect that attractiveness may be a marker of good genes, which also signal good health, and increase the likelihood of having healthy offspring.

The most attractive men were found to have a 20 percent lower risk of high blood pressure, and a 15 percent lower risk of being diagnosed with depression. Women rated most attractive were 21 percent less likely to be diagnosed with high blood pressure, 22 percent less likely to have diabetes, and were 17 percent less likely to suffer with depression. Study leader, Dr. Nils Braakmann, says, "The health benefit may be an indirect outcome of better treatment in societies that value attractiveness.

The New Cost of a 4th of July Picnic

When you hear the phrase "Fourth of July" what do you think of? Hot dogs, sparklers, a cold beer? Many people celebrate Independence day by holding a good old fashioned backyard picnic, and it turns out it's still pretty cheap to do so. The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) says a picnic for ten that includes hot dogs, cheeseburgers, pork spare ribs, potato salad and more costs an average of $58.72 in 2014, less than $6 per person.

AFBF economist John Anderson says, "Despite some modest price increases over the past year or so-- meats especially-- most Americans should be able to find summer picnic foods at prices close to the averages found by our volunteer shoppers." Meat prices are higher this year due to the nation's cattle herd being "historically small."

Bosses Use Social Media More Than Subordinates

In most offices, checking your Facebook on company time is a huge no-no. However, a new study finds that bosses don't play by their own rules. Researchers from Norway surveyed more than 11-thousand Norwegian workers. They found that managers and corporate executives held more negative views of social media use at work, and yet were still more likely to check their social media pages during working hours than subordinates. Study author Schou Andreassen says, "The finding may... reflect that people with a high socioeconomic status are not as afraid to lose their job as those in low-status jobs. In addition, high rollers may be more interested in social media to advance their career."

Scientifically: Sunglasses DO Make You Look Better

There's something alluring about a person wearing sunglasses, and science can now explain why a person rocking shades almost always seems attractive. U.K. researcher Vanessa Brown explains that sunglasses hide asymmetry around our eyes, and suggest a more "chiseled" bone structure, both of which are considered attractive. Additionally, a pair of shades shields our eyes, which means people have a harder time making judgments about what the wearer is thinking or feeling, and lends an air of mystery and glamour
