People Don't Exercise When Life Isn't Fair

Losing weight is challenging, and a new study finds that those who have been the target of weight discrimination and believe the practice is widespread are likely to give up on exercise rather than try to lose weight. The online study questioned more than 800 Americans to find out if they believed that their positive actions would lead to good results.

People who experienced weight bias in the past were more likely to say they didn't believe in a just world and were more likely to say they did not plan to exercise than those who said they believe the world is just. Study author Rebecca Pearl explains that discrimination leads some people to adopt a pessimistic view of the world, and causes them to accept negative stereotypes about themselves including the belief that they're lazy. The phenomenon is known as the "why try" effect.

Men More Likely to Help Women Wearing High Heels

What you wear can really change how you are perceived by others. A new study finds that men are more likely to help a woman wearing high heels than a woman shorter heels or flats. A series of experiments revealed men were more likely to strike up a conversation in a bar with a woman wearing high heels, as well as pick up a dropped glove.

The strength of a man's willingness to help even corresponded positively to the height of the heels. The responses of women to a dropped glove were unaffected by the shoe type of the glove dropper. Lead researchers Nicolas Gueguen concludes, "Women's shoe heel size exerts a powerful effect on men's behavior."

Cost of Thanksgiving Reaches Record Levels

Hosting Thanksgiving again this year? You'll have to pay a bit more than last year. Serving ten people a full dinner is expected to cost $49.41, 37 cents more than in 2013. The uptick in price can be blamed on the increased cost of dairy products, and miscellaneous ingredients such as coffee, sugar, eggs and sweet potatoes.

At the same time, flour-based foods such as stuffing mix, pie shells and dinner rolls got a tad cheaper this year. Though this year's cost is up from last year, it's still seven cents lower than in 2012. The spread you'll get for $49.41 includes: turkey, bread stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, carrots and celery, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, coffee and milk.

America Is Warming up to the Pit Bull

Certain dog breeds are more discriminated against than others, but it seems one breed is beginning to pull on America's heart strings: the pit bull. Since June alone, nine Midwest communities have struck down mixed-breed restrictions after considering the arguments of those who say "breed-specific legislation" (BSL) doesn't cut down on dog bites.

The opponents of BSL also argue the laws cause millions of dogs to be put down, many of which may have acted aggressively due to their upbringing, not their genes. Among those who don't support BSL: the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Humane Society, and the National Canine Research Council. Still, Aurora, Colorado residents voted to keep their ban earlier this month, and Miami-Dade County upheld its ban in 2012. Even some branches of the U.S. armed forces have banned "dangerous dogs" from base because of "unreasonable risk."

More Chinese People Are Getting Operations to Change Their Voices

If you thought plastic surgery was an extreme thing to do, imagine getting an operation that would change the pitch of your voice. People in China are doing just that, and it's the latest procedure in the booming cosmetic surgery market.

The surgery is considered high risk, and could cause the patient to get pneumonia, or lose their voice altogether. Dr. Huang Yideng says he's performed more than 200 vocal surgeries over the last four years, usually on women seeking higher-pitched voices and men seeking lower-pitched voices. Social Scientists Chen Yaya notes that people are undergoing the risky procedure in an effort to conform "more fully to gender stereotypes."

The Worst Times to Travel for Thanksgiving

Have you ever been caught in holiday traffic? It's the worst. Luckily, Google has crunched the numbers this year, and is predicting the best and worst times to travel. They found traveling the day before Thanksgiving is a bad idea, as it's the busiest travel day in most places.

Some of the traffic might be caused by people running out making last minute preparations, as the top three Google Maps trends for the day before Thanksgiving are: pie shop, ham shop, and liquor store. If you insist on traveling Wednesday, you're best off leaving before 2 P.M. or after 7 P.M. to avoid the worst of the traffic. When you turn around to head home you're better off traveling Sunday, as Saturday has up to 40 percent worse traffic

Oxford Dictionary Word of the Year: "Vape"

Are you familiar with the word "vape?" Oxford Dictionaries, the online presence of the publishers of the Oxford English Dictionary, say it's the word of the year. The dictionary defines vape as a verb that means to inhale and exhale the vapor produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device, or a noun referring to an electronic cigarette or similar device.

Oxford University Press says the word first appeared in a 1983 article, but gained more prevalence in 2009 when electronic cigarettes became commercially available. With e-cigs becoming more popular and the legalization and decriminalization of marijuana in several places, vape has seen a dramatic increase in usage in recent years. Words "vape" beat out the following words: bae, contactless, normcore, slacktivism, budtender and indyref.

Men Reaching Milestone Birthday Most Likely to Cheat

Could age be a factor when it comes to cheating? A new study finds that males who have an age ending in 9-- 29, 39, 49-- were much more likely to register for an extramarital dating site than men of other ages. 'Nine-enders" were also found to be particularly prone to behaviors "that suggest a search for, or crisis in meaning."

Researchers analyzed the responses of 42 thousand adults, and found that 9-enders reported thinking and questioning the meaning of life more than other respondents. Lead author Adam Atler explains, saying, "People audit the meaningfulness of their lives as they approach a new decade in chronological age. Once [they do this], people tend to reach one of two conclusions: either they conclude happily that their lives are meaningful or they decide that their lives lack meaning in at least one important domain."

Wearing Heels into Old Age Helps Maintain Balance

Our balance can start to deteriorate as early as our 30s, but women can fight the effects by wearing heels. Tai chi trainer Mark Peters explains balance starts to go as the communication between the muscles and brain begins to deteriorate.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Chistopher Walker says wearing heels can actually increase a woman's sense of balance by requiring the wearer to have a sense of how various parts of the body move relative to each other to be able to walk in them. Walker says when a woman stops wearing heels her sense of balance can actually deteriorate. In fact, ballroom dancing, basically exercising in heels, is recommended for women over age 65 since the benefits "are far greater than the risks of falling."

The Pill Acts as Beer Goggles to Women

The pill may prevent pregnancy, but it also kind of acts like beer goggles for women. A new study reveals that women who start or stop hormonal contraception during a relationship tend to experience a drop in sexual satisfaction.

Also, women in the study who got together with their future husbands while taking hormonal birth control and who later stopped using the medication also became less satisfied with their marriages if their husbands were less attractive than average. If their husband was attractive, women became more satisfied with their marriage after stopping the hormones. The effect may occur because the progesterone and estrogen in hormonal birth control affect women's fertility, and thus what they are looking for in a mate.

Chemical in Coffee Helps Fight Obesity

Do you drink coffee each day? It might help you ward off obesity. A chemical compound in coffee has been found to reduce insulin resistance and the accumulation of fat in the livers of mice who were fed a high-fat diet. The chemical is called cholorgenic acid, or CGA, and study author Dr. Yongjie Ma says it's a "powerful antioxidant that reduces inflammation."

Ma adds, "We're not suggesting that people start drinking a lot of coffee to protect themselves from an unhealthy lifestyle. But we do think that we might be able to create a useful therapeutic using CGA that will help those at risk for obesity-related disease as they make positive lifestyle changes."

Your Phone Bill Could Go up to Pay For Schools' Wi-Fi

Would you be willing to pay a little more on your phone bill if it meant schools would get free Wi-Fi? That's what Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler proposed on Monday. You may have already noticed a small fee on your phone bill each month that goes towards what's called the Universal Service Fund.

The USF is basically a pool of money created in 1997 meant to prevent market failures leading to poor Internet access in rural and low-income communities. Wheeler wants to increase those USF fees by about $1.90 per year for the average subscriber. The additional money would basically go towards a program designed to subsidize faster Internet connections in more of the country's public schools. The change isn't happening just yet--Wheeler's proposal will first have to clear a public comment period before being voted on by himself and the agency's four commissioners

How Quickly People Rebound After a Breakup

Many would say the best way to get over your ex is to see someone new, but is it true?

University of Missouri researchers questioned 170 participants who had been through a break-up in the last eight months, and 58 percent said they had slept with someone new within the first month of their break up. Just over a third of participants said they had rebound sex to "get over" their ex, while a quarter said they did so to get "revenge." Study leader Lynne Cooper adds "After being in a loving relationship for so long, having sex with someone else might be physically exciting, but the short term potent effect it has often leaves people feeling empty and disempowered afterwards."

Can You Make Diamonds out of Peanut Butter?

If you say the word diamond, you're unlikely to think of peanut butter next, until now. Scientist Dan Frost successfully used peanut butter to create a diamond. He used specialized pistons exerting around 28,000 times the pressure we experience on the surface of the Earth and compressed the carbon present in the peanut butter. He then used custom anvils to squeeze the peanut butter further.

What was left after all the squeezing was a very small diamond. Unfortunately, the compression released so much hydrogen that the gem was destroyed, but it's still pretty impressive.

School Lunches May be Healthier than Packed Lunches

In elementary school did you more often buy lunch or brown bag it? A new study of three rural Virginia elementary schools reveals that both packed and school-bought lunches almost entirely met nutrition standards, but the latter tended to have more calories, fat and saturated fat. Researchers looked at 1,314 lunches and recorded the nutritional content.

School meals averaged 512 calories and 13 grams of fat per lunch, while packed lunches averaged 608 calories and 21 grams of fat. Jason Schaub, who wasn't involved with the study, notes that bagged lunches contained more savory snacks and sugar-sweetened beverages and fewer fruits and veggies. This is an issue, he says, because children start developing preferences and behaviors towards food at a young age.

Thanksgiving Traffic: Looking Much Worse This Year

If you're planning to drive somewhere for Thanksgiving this year, you may want to leave extra, super early. A survey by TripAdvisor of 2,500 U.S. residents reveals that 43 percent say they plan to travel for the holiday this year, up from 36 percent who said they traveled for Thanksgiving 2013.

Additionally, 60 percent of those who say they'll travel say they plan to drive, and 35 percent say they'll fly. Both of those numbers are up from 57 percent and 37 percent, respectively, who said the same last year. Seventy four percent of respondents said they'll be crossing state lines for their turkey, and 14 percent are skipping the turkey entirely and heading out of the country.

Part of the reasons so many people are traveling this year-- the national gas price average has dropped below three bucks a gallon for the first time in years.

The Most Productive Hours of the Day

What's the first thing you do when you get up in the morning? If it's checking Facebook and drinking coffee you're wasting your time. Duke University behavioral scientist Dan Ariely explains the first two hours after we wake up in the morning are when we are most cognitively capable of getting work done.

Ariely says, "If we could salvage those precious hours, most of us would be much more successful in accomplishing what we truly want." So instead of checking twitter and chatting with coworkers when you first arrive at work, you might get a lot more accomplished if you simply jump right in.

The Most Common Fast Food Chain in Each State

You can't go far in the U.S. without seeing a fast food burger chain. Statistical site Flowing Data has compiled a series of maps showing how fast food chains are laid out across the country. One map features only fast food burger chains, and it's interesting to see, for example, that McDonald's has a strong presence in the Northeast, while Dairy Queens are sparse in that area. McDonald's has the most restaurant locations in the country with more than 13 thousand. Burger King comes in second place with just 6,900.

Apparently, 'Lumbersexual' Is a Thing

Here's a new word to add to your vocabulary: lumbersexual. Gear Junkie's Tom Puzak describes the lumbersexual as a man who wears an "unkempt beard, nothing tight, plaid, maybe even plaid on plaid, and an appropriate level of disaffection."

The description goes on: "His backpack carries a MacBook Air, but looks like it should carry a lumberjack's axe." Lumbersxuals are said to love the "pseudo-outdoors" but live in concrete jungles and can be spotted on city streets in their flannel and work boots. Tim Teeman at the Daily Beast says the look came from the gay community, and all news outlets seem to agree that the lumbersexuals are desirable mates.

Turns out Hitting a Machine Does Fix It... Temporarily

Does your Dad hit the TV when it doesn't work properly? It might actually work, at least temporarily. Mack Blakely, executive director of the National Electronics Service Dealers Association says, "In the old days, devices had a lot of mechanical stuff in 'em, and you could jar something back in place.

A solder connection might reconnect, but it probably wouldn't be long before it would be acting up again." Blakely says even today, the same logic still holds, but adds you could risk damaging the machine. He says a few well-placed taps may identify a weak connection on a printed circuit board, and adds, "The word 'tap' is important. It's not 'hit;' it's 'tap.'" Have you ever broken or fixed a machine by hitting or tapping it?

'Paper' Mag Director Says Nude Photo Shoot Was All Kim K's Idea

Mickey Boardman, the editorial director of Paper magazine, says it was all Kim Kardashian's idea to show everything during her photo shoot with Jean-Paul Goude.

He told Yahoo!, "Kim's attitude was 'if we're gonna do it, let's do it, let's really go there.' And it was her idea to take off her clothes and show more than her butt. But we didn't say 'let's do a cover with your butt hanging out.' She said she was willing to take her clothes off and one thing led to another, and history in the making!" He also addresses the photoshopping rumors saying, "There was much less retouching than people think...That's really what she looks like...But you've seen her, she has a teeny little waist, she has that huge butt, and skinny little legs. That's her...I would say it's the normal amount of retouching that's on a normal cover."

Lorde Defends Taylor Swift in Katy Perry Twitter Attack

Katy Perry's rumored boyfriend, Diplo, got involved in the alleged rivalry between Katy and Taylor Swift by targeting Swift on Twitter on Wednesday night. The DJ wrote, "Someone should make a Kickstarter to get Taylor swift a booty."

Someone took it one step further and set up a fundraising page on Fundly to take donations for the cause. The page reads, "Taylor Swift Still Needs Your Help! Any true supporter of TSWIFT would definitely not pass up this opportunity to improve her posterior! Spread The Word If You Believe In Magic!" It has only raised $45 of the $3,500 goal as of this morning.

Lorde jumped into the situation by tweeting her own message to Diplo which read, "Should we do something about your tiny [member] while we're at it hm."

Would You Speed Date with a Paper Bag over Your Head?

What's the weirdest thing you'd do for love? Some people will apparently speed date wearing a paper bag over their head. A company called Loveflutter came up with the idea, and says the goal is to eliminate the shallow element of dating, as initial connections between two individuals are usually based almost purely on looks.

The company is organizing a speed dating event in which all participants must wear paper bags over their heads with a 140-character fact about themselves written on it. At the end of the session all participants will remove the bags from their heads. The event will take place November 19th at the New York Hall of Science. Loveflutter has already had one event like this in London. No word on the results yet.

Old Navy Charges More for Women's Plus Sizes

Old Navy has some explaining to do. The clothing store is under fire for charging men the same price for regular and larger sizes, while charging women up to 15 dollars more for plus sized items. Nearly 20,000 people have signed a petition asking Old Navy to change the prices. The Change.org petition reads in part: "Old Navy is participating in both sexism and sizeism, directed only at women." Old Navy has responded saying:
  • "Old Navy is proud to offer styles and apparel designed specifically for the plus size customer. For women, styles are not just larger sizes of other women's items, they are created by a team of experts in creating the most flattering, and on-trend plus styles which includes curve-enhancing and curve-flattering elements such as four-way stretch materials and contoured waistbands, which most men's garments do not include. This higher price point reflects the selection of unique fabrics and design elements."
However, when asked why the extra cost doesn't apply to regular women's clothing that includes the same fabrics and 'figure-enhancing elements' Old Navy did not respond.

New Plastic Surgery Trend: We Want Big Butts!

Maybe stars like Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea are to blame-- women want bigger butts. That means gym classes, and surgery that pumps fat into the booty are gaining in popularity. Booty Pop, a company that sells foam padded panties, reports that sales are up 47 percent in the last six months compared to the same period a year earlier.

Booty Pop's co-founder, Susan Bloomstone, says customers have even been asking for larger sizes, so they plan to start selling pads that are 25 percent larger this month. French sociologist Jean-Claude Kaufmann adds the trend for big butts is also reaching overseas, he says, "In uncertain times, people look for security. Men are attracted to women's hips and the buttocks for security and reassurance. Women respond to this. It's deeply psychological."

What do you think about this trend?

Amanda Bynes Was Never Homeless

Media outlets are reporting that Amanda Bynes' claim of having nowhere to live is not exactly true. Her parents allegedly tried to set her up with a hotel room to live in in Glendale which apparently included car services, food, and other amenities but Amanda wasn't into it. She supposedly only wants to live in Hollywood or West Hollywood and has been staying with friends to be in that area.

Sources say her parents feel that both neighborhoods will only cause trouble for their daughter and will open Amanda up for people to leech onto her. There are rumors circulating that Amanda's parents are planning to move back to Texas to be close to their other daughter after trying all they could do to fix the situation.

How Cliques Form and How to End Them

What type of clique were you in in high school? Researchers say they've discovered how cliques form, and even how to stop them from developing at all. They say it all has to do with the organizational setting of a school itself. For example, schools that offer students more choices in a variety of areas are more likely to have more cliques that are more segregated by race, age, gender and social status.

At schools where there are limited social choices and prescribed formats of interaction, cliques were less common. In other words, a more rigid school setting can sometimes promote for open-mindedness in making friends. Study author Daniel McFarland adds, "Educators often suspect that the social world of adolescents is beyond their reach and out of their control, but that's not really so. They have leverage, because the schools are indirectly shaping conditions in these societies."

Smoking Pot Regularly Results in Shrunken Brains

Smoking weed is now legal in some states, but is it really safe? A new study reveals that those who smoke pot at least four times a week have less gray matter in their brains than control subjects who didn't use pot. The area of the brain missing the gray matter was the orbitofrontal cortex which "helps us determine what is good for us and what keeps us sustained." It's unclear if the "shrunken brain" effect is the result of chronic use, or contributes to the tendency to smoke the stuff in the first place.

You'll Probably Live Longer than You Think

If you had to guess, how long do you suppose you'd live? Back in 1992, 26 thousand Americans over age 50 were asked what they thought the chances were they'd live to the age of 75. Now, nearly 24 years later, researchers have calculated to see if they were right. Here's what they found:
  • In 1992, 7 percent of respondents said they had no chance of living to 75, but 49.2 percent lived to 75 or longer
  • Among those who gave themselves a 50 percent chance of living to 75, 75 percent lived to that age or longer
  • Of those who said they were "100 percent" certain they would live to the age of 75, 78.2 percent lived that long or longer.
Study leader Christopher Ingraham notes that there's no clear relationship between how long people think they'll live, and how long they'll actually live, but respondents who gave themselves at least a 10 percent chance of living to 75 had at least a 60 percent chance of doing so.

Jennifer Lawrence Swears off Social Media Forever

Jennifer Lawrence sat down for an interview with BBC 1 radio in the UK where she explained, once again, why joining Twitter or social media does not interest her. She said, "I will never get Twitter. I'm not very good on phone or technology. I cannot really keep up with emails so the idea of Twitter is so unthinkable to me. I don't really understand what it is. It's like this weird enigma that people talk about."

Jennifer continued, "It's fine, I respect that, but no, I'll never get a Twitter. If you ever see a Facebook, Instagram or Twitter that says it's me, it most certainly is not." When host Nick Grimshaw pointed out how serious she got during that response, she said, "I had that one locked and loaded. I really like laser focused on that answer...it's because the internet has scorned me so much that I feel like it's that girl in high school that I'm like, 'Oh you want to talk about her? Yeah I'll do that!' Take my hoops off, I'm ready to go."

Nicki Minaj Apologizes for 'Only' Video

Nicki Minaj took to Twitter this morning to address the controversy surrounding her lyric video for "Only" which she claims was never meant to resemble the Nazi party. She wrote, "The artist who made the lyric video for "Only" was influenced by a cartoon on Cartoon Network called Metalocalypse & Sin City. Both the producer, & person in charge of overseeing the lyric video (one of my best friends & videographer: A. Loucas), happen to be Jewish. I didn't come up w/the concept, but I'm very sorry & take full responsibility if it has offended anyone. I'd never condone Nazism in my art."

As previously reported, the video was recently slammed by the Anti-Defamation League for evoking "Third Reich propaganda."

Hours later, the producer fessed up to using Nazi imagery.

Nick Jonas Says Transitioning to Adult Star Is Different for Men and Women

Nick Jonas recently sat down for an interview with Yahoo! Style where he discussed the transition from tween star to adulthood. The 22-year-old explained, "I think it is very different for men and women. And I can only speak for my journey, because it's the only one I know very well. I think the challenge that I faced was in just giving people a reason to give me a second look."

When asked about his recent scantily clad photo shoots, he said, "I think I tread those waters carefully. After doing a few hits that were that, I said, 'Okay, let's shut down that side of it for a little while and put the focus on other areas.' And if the argument is that there's too much focus on that, well I say the week that the Flaunt shoot came out, 'Jealous' shot up the iTunes chart, and that was our biggest sales week so far. There are things that are driving people to the music and the TV show, and you've got to be thankful for that." Nick also added, "I probably was more intense and more reserved and concerned about interviews, and about not being perfect while I was with Disney. And now I'm kind of like, [screw] it. I do what I love, I love what I do.' And that's a freeing thing."

Sharing Food Makes You a Better Person

Eating by yourself is no fun, and a new study finds that sharing a meal with others actually makes you a better person. Researchers from Belgium asked 466 students about how often they ate home-cooked family meals during childhood and about their current prosocial behavior. They found those who shared meals more frequently in childhood were more altruistic.

They were particularly more likely to give directions to strangers, offer their seats on public transportation, help their friends move, and volunteer. Lead Researcher Charlotte De Backer explains the connection, writing, "Sharing food primes people to think about fairness (Do I get as much as everyone else at the table?), authority (Who is being served first?), and greed (Sometimes I cannot take as much as I would personally want.)"

Birch Water to Become New Health Fad in 2015

You've heard all about coconut water and quinoa, but have you heard of Birch water? The drink could soon be topping lists of "healthy" drinks. It's removed from trees using the same process that drains syrup from maple tree and in its raw form is a thin, sweet-tasting liquid that is said to be high in macronutrients, electrolytes and potassium.

It's supposed to be very good for rehydration, and contains saponin, which has been shown to control blood cholesterol levels and be good for the immune system. The drink is already widely used in Eastern Europe and parts of Northern China, so don't be surprised if you see it in Whole Foods soon.

'Stupid' Virus Discovered

You could have a virus in your system right now that's making you dumber, and not even know it. U.S. researchers tested 92 study participants for the chlorovirus ATCV-1, and found 43 percent of people had it. Those affected scored about 10 percent lower on tests involving visual processing, and their attention spans also appeared to be shorter.

The virus is apparently found in algae, and more research is needed to see if the virus exists in people outside the Baltimore study area. A researcher notes, "There's more and more studies showing that microorganisms in your body have a bigger influence than anything anyone would have predicted, and this could be something along those lines."

More People to Travel This Thanksgiving

Planning to fly somewhere for Thanksgiving? You'll have a lot of company. U.S. airlines report they plan to fly 24.6 million passengers over the 12 days surrounding Thanksgiving-- up 1.5 percent from last year. The worst day of travel could be the Sunday after Thanksgiving, when U.S. airlines predict 2.6 million people will fly.

Airline for America, the trade group that did the research, says that rising personal incomes and job growth are helping to boost demand for travel this year. However, even if airlines meet this year's forecast, Thanksgiving travel would still fall about six percent lower than it was before the recession began in 2008.

Having a Sense of Purpose Makes You Live Longer

Would you say your life has meaning and purpose? If so, you may live a little longer than those without a sense of meaning and purpose. About 9,000 people over age 65 were followed for eight and a half years. Researchers periodically measured their wellbeing, including how much they thought what they did was worthwhile.

They found that happier people tended to outlive their peers. Over the study period, just 9 percent of those in the highest wellbeing category died, compared to 29 percent of those in the lowest category. Study leader Andrew Steptoe says it's possible to engineer environments that encourage greater wellbeing, like bringing pets into nursing homes, or having residents partake in gardening, and that these changes really may help residents live longer.

Why People Text and Drive Behind the Wheel Even Though They Know It's Dangerous

It's well known that texting while driving is a really bad idea. A new study surveyed 1,000 drivers and found that 98 percent of people who text everyday and drive frequently say texting behind the wheel is dangerous, and yet, 75 percent say they do it anyway. Study leader David Greenfield explains the buzz of an incoming text message causes the brain to release dopamine, which causes excitement.

If the message turns out to be from someone appealing, even more dopamine is released. Curbing the compulsion to look at a new text could take years for a text-obsessed person. Greenfield adds, "In order to really include oneself in a group that has a problem with texting and driving, they have to admit their own fallibility, and we're loath to do that."

Hipsters Have Created a Hipster Paradox

A hipster is a person who follows the latest trends, especially those outside the mainstream. This can include fashion choices to hobby and transportation choices. The problem with trying so hard to be different is that everyone following the unique trends ends up looking the same. This issues is known as the "hipster paradox" and now a mathematician has created a formula that shows why the phenomenon takes place.

Professor Jonathan Touboul created the formula and explains it by saying, "If you take large sets of interacting individuals-- whether hipsters, stock traders, or any group that decides to go against the majority-- by trying to be different, they will ultimately all do the same thing at the same time." He says uncovering what causes the paradox, however, is much more complex.

Moviegoers Sick of Trailers Being Better than The Movie

Trailers are meant to make you want to watch the full movie, so it's no surprise moviegoers are getting irritated with trailers that are better than the actual movie, or give away the entire plot of the movie. A new study reveals 80 percent of people have been left disappointed with a film after seeing the trailer. Audiences crave trailers that excite, tease, and leave them emotionally engaged, without revealing excessive narrative.

Study leader Keith Johnston says, "Despite the enduring appeal and apparent popularity of these coming attractions, modern trailer releases arrive with a perceived popular stigma-- the presumption that they actively mislead or deceive audiences... Audiences are aware of those issues when they watch a trailer, and find trailers enjoyable despite the expectations that a marketing campaign might set up."

The Perfect Gift for Millenials

Stumped on what to get a Millennial for the holidays? A digital gift card is a good bet. A new report from Bankrate finds that Milliennials are twice as likely as older adults to lose a physical gift card, and 40 percent of 18-to-29-year-olds surveyed admit they've lost a gift card before. Jeanina Skowronski, a credit card analyst says, "Plastic gift cards can take up a lot of real estate in your wallet, electronic versions don't, and I think that resonates with Millennials."

It shouldn't be too hard get the digital gift card you want either, Bankrate reports 59 percent of gift cards on the market can now be delivered digitally, when back in 2010 just 18 percent could be. Shelley Hunter with GiftCards.com adds, "The age group is all about instant gratification, so sending them a digital gift card that comes on their phone and has a video that makes them laugh, that really resonates with Millennials."

Why Women Have a Superior Sense of Smell

Smell that? Science has a new explanation about why women have a keener sense of smell than men do. Previously it was thought women's heightened sense of smell was due to emotional and cognitive influences, but new research pins more brain cells as the reason.

Researchers from Brazil looked at the post-mortem brains in men and women, and found female brains have up to 50 percent more olfactory neurons than males'. It's thought the superior sense of smell can help with mother-child bonding and also influence females' selection of potential mates.

Unconditional Acceptance Helps Kids Cope with Setbacks

How accepting are you? A new study shows that kids who feel accepted and supported by their peers "no matter what" cope better after a setback. Researchers from The Netherlands divided over 200 kids into three different groups, and one group was asked to reflect on an experience where they felt "unconditional acceptance."

The students received their report cards the following week, and those who got lower grades, but also reflected on feeling unconditionally accepted "did not experience increased negative self-feelings." Study leader Avi Assor says, "I think it is a very interesting and important study mainly because it shows that our experiences and memories of significant others' reactions to our failures are very important in shaping our self-feelings."

Signs People Are Lying

How many white lies do you think you tell in a day? Scientist and linguistics expert Noah Zandan says that people structure the truth and lies differently when speaking. For example, people tend to talk about themselves less and others more when they lie, tend to talk in the third person, and tend to be more negative in what they say.

He explains, saying, "For example, a liar might say: 'Sorry, my stupid phone battery died. I hate that thing.'" A liar will also only explain events with minimal details, but use longer and more convoluted sentences to "pad" their lie. The average person hears between 10 and 200 lies every day.

Being a Workaholic Is Really Unhealthy

Americans work too much, and new data finds that being a workaholic is actually quite unhealthy. Study author Melissa Clark says that while the term is often used as shorthand to describe a hard worker primed for success, being a workaholic can make you more stressed out, create work-life conflict, take a toll on your health as well as leave you burnt out and unproductive.

Additionally, no connection was found between workaholism and financial reward or self-efficacy, but it was linked to perfectionism and the "achievements of type A personalities."

'Painfully Awkward' Rob Lowe Ads Upset 'Shy Bladder' Group

A group for people who suffer from "shy bladder syndrome" are complaining about those DirecTV ads that feature Rob Lowe playing two versions of himself -- a slick Rob Lowe who has the satellite service and a "painfully awkward" Rob Lowe with cable who can't pee in public. DirecTV is trying to get people to switch from cable, saying in the ads that cable makes people wait, showing awkward Lowe at a urinal saying, "Fact: I can't go with other people in the room."

Steve Soiffer, head of the International Paruresis Association, said, "We don't mind if people have a little fun with it. . . . In this particular case, the portrayal is making it look ridiculous, that this guy is a loser for having a problem. What if he didn't have a leg or an arm? Are you going to make fun of them?" But DirecTV said it's not pulling the ads, saying, "the vast majority of viewers who have told us they enjoy the spots and understand that, like all our commercials, they take place in a fantasy world and are not based in reality."

Working Nights Dulls the Brain

Working all night long can leave your brain tried as well as your body. A new study reveals shift work can disrupt the internal clock and weaken brain power over time. The data shows consistent disruption of a person's internal clock can diminish the brain's processing speed and memory abilities, and can even age the brain by up to six additional years.

Study leader Philip Tucker says, "It is likely that when people [try] to undertake complex cognitive tasks...they might make more mistakes and slip-ups." But the findings weren't all bad-- brain function was found to normalize after five years off the overnight shift.

Sad Music Makes Us Feel Better when Upset

Feeling down? Put on some sad songs, new data shows it'll make you feel better. German researchers surveyed 722 people worldwide about how often they listen to sad music, and the emotions they feel while doing so. Most people were found to experience more than three emotions when listening to melancholy tracks-- a more complex reaction than listening to say, happy pop songs.

Study co-author Liila Taruffi says, "Music-evoked sadness can be appreciated not only as an aesthetic, abstract reward, but [it] also plays a role in well-being, by providing consolation as well as regulating negative moods and emotions." Some emotions sad music stirs up: nostalgia, peacefulness, tenderness, transcendence and wonder.

The Annual Cost of Raising a Kid

Babies tend to make most people happy, but they make their parents broke. BabyCenter's 2014 "Cost of Raising a Child" report reveals parents spend an average of $13,000 a year per child. That cost leaves 66 percent of moms worried about not having enough dough to raise their children. That high price tag covers housing, food, transportation, clothing and healthcare.

Still, all that money may not go towards necessities. Carmen Ulrich, financial expert, says, "With social media and constant marketing, there's a lot of pressure on mothers to feel like they need to buy the latest and the greatest products in order to do right as a parent." So perhaps it's no surprise that 60 percent of women said they feel pressure to appear well-off on social media.

Why Some Men Catcall

Catcalling is argued as being flattering by some, and just plain creepy and wrong by others. So why do men do it? Sexuality educator Dr. Yvonne Fullbright says men likely pick up the behavior from a friend, family member or coworker.

She says, "The men who do this without thinking twice are those who have learned that it's okay to objectify women, and disrespect women in the guise of a compliment. They think that their opinion and need to express themselves so publicly is more important and acceptable than offending others." How is such behavior curbed? Fullbright says a man is less likely to catcall if he knows women in his circle would disapprove, or if he knows the act is socially unacceptable.

Baby Diets Influenced by Mother's Education and Income

What a baby eats can be more important than you think. Researchers analyzed data from over 1,500 infants in the U.S. aged 6 to 12 months and found that a baby's diet is mostly dependent on the socioeconomic background of its mother. They found that babies born to moms with household incomes below $25,000 per year and with education limited to high school were more likely to eat diets higher in fat, sugar and proteins.

Lead study author Xiaozhong Wen believes a baby's first solid foods can be a predicator for obesity later in life. He said, "Dietary patterns are harder to change later if you ignore the first year, a critical period for the development of taste preferences and the establishment of eating habits."

Researchers believe the key lies in the fact that the insula, the area of the brain that processes temperatures like warmth, is also where impressions about others are formed. A pumpkin spice latte never sounded so good!

What Age Men and Women Find Each other Most Attractive

What age group do you go after? After analyzing the profiles of daters on OKCupid and OKTrends, researchers have created graphs indicating how our tastes in partners changes as we age. Study leader Christian Rudder says, "Women who are, say, 28 find guys who are also 28 about the most attractive, and so forth. Up until about 40, when that's getting too old." Not surprisingly, the findings reveal men at all ages find women at age 20 most attractive.

To that, Rudder comments, "From the time you're 22 you'll be less hot than a 20-year-old, based on this data. So that's just a thing. It is kind of terrible."
