Men and Women are Equally Bad Drivers

Women may be stereotyped as poor drivers, but it turns out both sexes are bad at driving, just in different ways. Insurance companies will charge up to $358 more for auto insurance for a man with no tickets or accidents than they will for a woman. But why? Studies have shown that men are more likely to speed, drive aggressively, and operate under the influence.

Overall, men are more likely to crash, total their cars, and have high medical and lawyer bills. Insurers are looking at those costs, and Michael Barry of the Insurance Information Institute says, "That's why the auto insurer is looking at gender." Older research has found that women have higher rates of non-injury accidents than men age 25+, and that women are more likely to be struck while making turns at intersections.
