NYC Okays Luxury Building with "Poor Door" Entrance

New York City's Department of Housing Preservation and Development has approved plans for a new luxury apartment building that will have a separate apartment for poorer residents, dubbed a "poor door" by critics. The New York Post reports that approval was finally given this month, after real estate developer Extell first unveiled plans for the 33-story building on Manhattan's Upper West Side last August. In order to get millions of dollars in tax breaks, Extell is including 55 units of affordable housing in the building.

But the company designed it so that the residents of those units will have a separate entrance and separate elevators than those who live in the 219 luxury apartments. Among the critics of the "poor door" is state Assemblywoman Linda B. Rosenthal, who represents the neighborhood, who said the arrangement is, quote, "abominable and has no place in the 21st century."
