New Earthquake Map Released

The U.S. Geological Survey has released its new map showing which areas of the country are mostly likely to experience a significant earthquake in the next 50 years. Its updated National Seismic Hazard Map shows that 16 states are a high risk: Alaska; Arkansas; California; Hawaii; Idaho; Illinois; Kentucky; Missouri; Montana; Nevada; Oregon; South Carolina; Tennessee; Utah; Washington; and Wyoming. The risk map doesn't include any data on quakes that could be related to fracking, even while the USGS says the process might be responsible for a significant increase in earthquakes in places like Oklahoma.

The agency said it hopes to use the data in future maps, but explained that it's harder to include because fracking-related earthquake may not behave like natural quakes and their rates change based on man-made activity.
