Facebook Tests Satire Tag

If you've ever read an article from The Onion that someone posted to Facebook and mistaken it for real news, you're not alone. Facebook recognizes the issue and is testing out a feature that marks fake news stories with "satire" in its News Feed.

A Facebook representative told Mashable, "We are running a small test which shows the text '[Satire]' in front of links to satirical articles in the related articles unit in News Feed. This is because we received feedback that people wanted a clearer way to distinguish satirical articles from others in these units." The tag is considered especially useful for sites that aren't as well-known as The Onion.

Recently The Daily Currant posted a satirical article about former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin joining Qatar-based Al Jazeera as a commentator, and the Washington Post published it on its website as real news. They paper later posted a correction, but it just shows how satirical articles really can cause confusion.

App Forces Teens to Pick up Phone Calls

If you kid always ignores your calls-- there's an app to prevent that. It's called "Ignore No More," and a New York mom thought it up after she got sick of her teen kids ignoring her calls. The mom worked with developers for months, and the result is a $1.99 app that allows parents to lock their kids' phones from a separate device, forcing them to call a list of select numbers in order to gain access to the device. If that won't help you sleep better at night, nothing will.

The Liklihood of You Catching a Disease While on an Airplane

Airplanes can be germy places, but it turns out they're not great at spreading infectious diseases among passengers. For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says if a suspected tuberculosis carrier was aboard a jet, the agency wouldn't expect exposure to extend beyond two rows in either direction.

However, airliners are good at delivering infectious diseases to entire countries. The SARS breakout in Canada in 2003 was traced to a single airline passenger. Experts say that the chance of catching Ebola from a fellow passenger is slim, as the virus is spread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, not by sitting in a middle seat.

Scientific Theory about Why Women Get PMS

The symptoms of premenstrual syndrome are unpleasant, and science has long been trying to figure out why PMS occurs. Now one researcher is offering a possible explanation. In a new paper, Michael Gillings, a professor of molecular evolution, writes, "PMS is a simple and natural behavior that arose as a consequence of our evolutionary past."

Gillings theorizes that PMS would have broken up infertile relationships, or as he puts it, "the animosity exhibited during PMS would be directed at the mate" which would kill the relationship. To sum it up, Gillings says, "Imagine that a woman was pair bonded with a sterile or infertile male. If women in these relationships exhibited PMS and this increased the likelihood of the pair bond dissolving, this would be a huge reproductive advantage." Still, not everyone buys it. Dr. Olivia Judson says the hypothesis is "intriguing but far from proven."

What if Americans Had the Same Vacation Time as Europeans?

As Americans, we're noted for having a poor work-life balance, in fact, we're ranked 28th in the world for it. On average, American workers get about two weeks paid vacation every year. People in Europe get about four weeks, while workers from Sweden get 41 days off to do whatever they'd like. But what if we had as much vacation time as those from Europe?

Bruce Sacerdote, a professor of economics at Dartmouth University says, "Travel would go way up. Restaurant consumption particularly in vacation areas would really benefit." Other experts say the time off would improve the health and well-being of those in the U.S., but would knock down the country's productivity a significant amount. It would also mean lowered salaries, and therefore less money for splurging. As Sacerdote says, "So our household would have to cut back to one iPad from two and obviously that would just be horrific."

New Method Gets Newborns to Sleep Through the Night

New parents are known for being sleep deprived, but there may be a way to avoid that. A new method has been developed that helps newborns sleep through the night. Drs. Lewis Jassey and Jonathon Jassey said they can train newborns to sleep through the night by stretching out meal times to occur at four-hour intervals during the day.

The theory is that they can train a baby's hunger receptors to acclimate to a specific schedule, and that as long as the baby gets the right amount of food to be healthy, they will not become hungry at inconvenient times. The doctors say if a baby is going fewer than four hours between feedings, parents should extend the time between feedings by fifteen minutes each day to gradually increase the in-between times.

Jonathon says, "Stay patient; it's going to work and eventually their brain will follow their actual stomach. A baby is a creature as far as habit [goes], so the earlier that we can get started on a good routine, the better for everybody."

A Woman's Happiness Peaks at 25

What age do you think you've been happiest at? New data reveals that women are happiest at age 25, and feel most stressed out at age 34. Researchers looked at two thousand women and say bills, work, body concerns and family pressures make the mid-thirties less fun for women than their mid-twenties.

Eighteen percent of women described themselves as unhappy due to stress, and this feeling was most prevalent among those aged 35 to 44. The things women said stress them out the most: not having enough money, the health and well-being of family and friends, the happiness of children and having a good family life, how they come across to other people, and being attractive.

Negotiating a Better Deal? Look Angry!

Being nice can only get you so far. A new study reveals that looking angry is key to getting what you want. Harvard University's Ian Reed says for the best negotiating clout you should look irritated, with slanted brows, glaring eyes and tight lips.

Reed says, "The effectiveness of a threat depends on how credible it is," so an angry expression makes a person seem more credible because people intuitively think it's genuine. Still, you shouldn't make actual threats, as that will most likely just get you escorted out of the buiding.

Coffee Tastes Gritty? It May Have Dirt in It...

Ever think that morning cup of joe tastes gritty? There might be some dirt in there, according to a new report. Due to recent coffee shortages, producers may be turning to finely ground fillers such as wood, husks, whole coffee berries, and even clumps of Earth to compensate for the lost beans.

Study leader Suzana Nixdorf says, "Normal people can't taste the difference," and that other common fillers include corn, soybeans, and brown sugar. She says she's developed a test to determine if coffee is pure or not. She adds, "I hope the industry will [use] this method to really guarantee quality without using fillers."

Smartphone App Accused of Racism

A new app called SketchFactor that uses crowd-sourced data to inform users of the more unsafe -- or "sketchy" -- areas of a city or neighborhood is facing charges that it's racist. One critic wrote on Bustle, "The app will only tell you what 'seemed sketchy' to other people. And if we are to assume that most of these users are young white people with smartphones, then it isn't long before people's internalized biases . . . start to rear their ugly heads."

But while anyone can report anything they perceive as sketchy using the app, PC Magazine says that it also includes crime data for cities that offer it, something the Bustle critic had incorrectly said it doesn't do.

SketchFactor co-founders Allison McGuire and Daniel Herrington have been defending their app against the racist charges, writing on its website, "SketchFactor is a tool that can be used by anywhere at any time by anyone. The app is not exclusive to privileged communities or tourists. Many or our users experience racial profiling, police misconduct and harassment. We encourage all users to report this information. In addition, we partner with community organizations to ensure all members of the community have access to this app."

Why Are There So Many Redheads on Television?

What kind of a hair day are you having? Apparently, many red heads are being used to sell products. A new study reveals that 30 percent of network television ads that run during prime time feature someone with red hair. Fifty six percent of those ads feature the redhead as the main character, while the rest were extras or background characters.

Andrew Rohm, professor of Marketing at Loyola Marymount University says, "I think it's the novelty factor. The first job for a traditional 30- or 60-second commercial, because they are so fleeting, is to make us pay attention. That is where the redheads come in." Other studies have linked the color red with sexual attraction.

Online Dating Intimidates Women from Seeking Relationships IRL

Do you know anyone who is in a relationship with someone they met online? New research finds that online dating has caused people to be too afraid to approach potential partners in real life. Psychologist Emma Kenny calls the phenomeon "Tinderalla syndrome," and says, "The problem is, online dating breeds impatience and insecurity. You're suddenly inundated with so many potential love interests that you stop investing the same amount of effort into meeting actual people offline."

Match.com's Kate Taylor disagrees, saying, "Mobile dating apps are actually helping people flirt and chat with each other-- they make people feel more confident when they end up talking face-to-face." Kenny adds, "Online dating was designed to enhance your love life-- not replace it altogether."

App Makes You Look Taller and Thinner

If the filters on Instagram and other photo editing apps just don't do it for you, there's now Spring. The app lets users stretch out photos of themselves so they appear taller and thinner. The app's description says it wants to "help you adjust your body proportions" so "your body looks sexier."

Users just pick two or three spots on their body in the area they want to stretch, and then the app does the work and keeps everything proportional. Still, it's possible to stretch out the background of the photo and make the alterations obvious.

We Have the Most Friends at 29

How many close friends do you have? A poll of 1,505 UK adults reveals that respondents age 29 have the most friends. Thirty eight percent of people said they've befriended at least ten people at work. Those who work in marketing count 40 colleagues as pals, while chefs and cooks count 33, and artists and designers count 27.

The average respondent had 64 friends, with 17 of those friendships being formed in the workplace, 14 being old school or college friends, and another 14 being met through shared interests and other social activities. Researchers say, "Interestingly, it appears the long hours and high pressured situations we often find ourselves at work with colleagues actually helps us form strong friendships." The study also revealed the best way to start a friendship with a colleague is to go to lunch with them.

Working out May Cause Cavities

If you're a fitness nut with some unexplained cavities your workouts may be to blame. A new study finds that triathletes have significantly higher levels of tooth erosion than non-athletes. Additionally, the more an athlete trained, the more cavities they had.

Researchers say this may happen for two reasons: because endurance athletes consume a high number of carbohydrates which can alter the mouth's pH level, and also because breathing through the mouth dries it out and leads to less saliva. The scientists who conducted the study are currently testing special toothpastes and mouth rinses on athletes to see if a product could help them curb the tooth erosion issue.

App Sends Photos and Video to Random People around the World

Putting a message in a bottle and floating it out to sea is now possible without the bottle or the sea. A new, free, app called Fling allows users to share photos, videos and text messages with up to 50 randomly chosen people around the world. When a user 'flings' a message they are not given an option of where it will go.

Recipients have the option of replying to the message and starting a conversation. Developers say, "Fling is restructuring the messaging complex and opening the doors to those who are bored of cluttered social news feeds with photos and messages from people they already know-- having a thirst to widen their sharing and connect with people outside the country they're in."

Men and Women are Equally Bad Drivers

Women may be stereotyped as poor drivers, but it turns out both sexes are bad at driving, just in different ways. Insurance companies will charge up to $358 more for auto insurance for a man with no tickets or accidents than they will for a woman. But why? Studies have shown that men are more likely to speed, drive aggressively, and operate under the influence.

Overall, men are more likely to crash, total their cars, and have high medical and lawyer bills. Insurers are looking at those costs, and Michael Barry of the Insurance Information Institute says, "That's why the auto insurer is looking at gender." Older research has found that women have higher rates of non-injury accidents than men age 25+, and that women are more likely to be struck while making turns at intersections.

Dinosaurs Evolved into Birds

Scientists have been able to detail how a class of dinosaurs called theropods evolved into birds by comparing the fossils of 120 different species. The two-legged, meat-eating dinosaurs got continually smaller relatively quickly, getting more feathery with larger chests until they evolved into the earliest version of birds. Study author Michael S. Y. Lee of the University of Adelaide in Australia said, "They just kept on shrinking and shrinking and shrinking for about 50 million years."

Special Ice Cream Changes Color as You Lick It

Ice cream is an exciting treat to have all on its own, and now a certain type can change colors when you lick it. A Spanish scientist has created a formula for ice cream than changes colors when exposed to new temperatures and different levels of acidity found in saliva. The product is called Xamaleon, and supposedly has a "tutti frutti"-like flavor.

The product starts out as a periwinkle color, then changes to pink and then purple after it's been licked. The creators of the color-changing ice cream say their next project will be a flavor made with medicinal plants that cause an aphrodisiac effect.

Why The Moon Is Shaped Like a Lemon

The Earth is round, and science has been able to explain why for a while. Now new research reveals why the moon is lemon-shaped. Researchers from the University of California say the Earth's shape can be explained by its rotation and the gravitational pull of the moon. They say the moon's lemon-like shape can be explain by the moon's "formational history." In the moon's early days it was apparently predominantly liquid, and was closer to the Earth than it is now, as well as spinning faster.

These two factors had a sculpting effect, and then were made permanent as the moon solidified and matured. Researcher Ian Garrick-Bethell explains, "If you imagine a spinning water balloon, it will start to flatten at the poles and bulge at the equator. On top of that you have tides due to the gravitational pull of the Earth, and that creates sort of a lemon shape with the long axis of the lemon pointing at the Earth.
