The New Cost of a 4th of July Picnic

When you hear the phrase "Fourth of July" what do you think of? Hot dogs, sparklers, a cold beer? Many people celebrate Independence day by holding a good old fashioned backyard picnic, and it turns out it's still pretty cheap to do so. The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) says a picnic for ten that includes hot dogs, cheeseburgers, pork spare ribs, potato salad and more costs an average of $58.72 in 2014, less than $6 per person.

AFBF economist John Anderson says, "Despite some modest price increases over the past year or so-- meats especially-- most Americans should be able to find summer picnic foods at prices close to the averages found by our volunteer shoppers." Meat prices are higher this year due to the nation's cattle herd being "historically small."
