Posting a suggestive selfie may not be the best idea for women. Psychologists showed 120 female volunteers two Facebook profiles for a made-up woman named Amanda. The profiles were identical except for the profile photos. In one profile she was scantily clad and in the other she was dressed conservatively.
Researchers ask the volunteers to rate each profile in three areas: attractiveness, if she'd be a good friend, and if she'd be a capable worker. They found that Amanda's non-sexy profile scored highly across all categories while her sexy profile scored much lower. Researcher Elizabeth Daniels says, "There is so much pressure on teen girls and young women to portray themselves as sexy, but sharing those sexy photos online may have more negative consequences than positive." Her advice? "Showcase identity rather than appearance."
