Harry Potter Teaches Children to Be More Tolerant
The Harry Potter books could help your children be more tolerant of minority groups, according to new research out this week. The Italian researchers who came up with the results had asked children about their feelings towards either immigrants, gay people or refugees, and noted that there are many examples in J.K. Rowling's wildly popular series of bigotry, including Harry's defense of "mudbloods" and Voldemort's obsession with "pure-blood" witches and wizards.

The only caveat in the research was that the kids had the more tolerant attitudes only if they identified positively with Harry.

Polite Drivers Create Worse Traffic Jams
Are you a polite driver? If so, you might be contributing to traffic. Tom Vanderbilt, author of Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We Do (and What It Says About Us), says that the little things we do on the road each day make a big impact on traffic. For example, Vanderbilt says when a stalled car blocks a lane on the highway, drivers should use both lanes until the merge point, and then allow each other to take turns passing the lane closure in a "zipper" fashion.

He points out that Americans think this type of driving behavior is rude, while in Europe people often turn into the lane at the last second. Vanderbilt also thinks that self-driving cars could eliminate rubbernecking, and therefore unnecessary delays on roadways. He even says self-driving cars could eliminate 80 percent of accidents.

Mosquitos Love Beer
If you want to avoid getting eaten alive by mosquitos at your next barbeque, you might want to lay off of the booze. The American Mosquito Control Association found that there is a significant increase in mosquito landings after drinking just one beer. Scientists haven't yet determined what it is exactly about drinking that increases the likely hood of bites, though side effects from the alcohol such as increased body heat and carbon dioxide production could draw the pests.

A Third of Americans Owe Money to Debt Collectors
Eighty percent of Americans are carrying some debt - but a whopping 35 percent of them owe that money to debt collectors. The Urban Institute found that debts that have gone into collections are concentrated in lower-income areas of the country, particularly the south and southeast. However, even in New England, the area of the country with the lowest number of accounts in collections, just over 25% of the population has at least one outstanding bill.

The largest concentration of debtors are in the West South Central area (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas), where 44 percent of the population have a debt that has gone into collections. The studies found that the amount varies widely by person, but the average amount owed is $5,178 and covers everything from old gym memberships to medical debts.

Scientists Getting Closert to Pinpointing Region of the Brain Responsible for De
British scientists have pinpointed the area of the brain that is responsible for making pessimists see the glass as half-empty. An over-active habenula, which is about half the size of a pea, is linked to depression, pessimism, and a negative outlook on life. Dr. Jonathan Roiser, from the University College London explained, "The habenula tracks our experiences, responding more the worse something is expected to be. In this study we showed that the habenula doesn't just express whether something leads to negative effects or not; it signals quite how much bad outcomes are expected."

He is hopeful that understanding this part of the brain could help to develop better treatments for treatment-resistant depression.

OkCupid Also Does Psychological Tests on Users
After the headline-making revelation in June that Facebook had experimented on its users, tweaking what people saw on their News Feed to see if the kind of stories they looked at could make them feel happier or sadder, another social media website is admitting that it also messed with its users in the name of research.

Dating website OKCupid posted in its OKTrends blog on Monday (July 28th) about the experimentation, but was totally unapologetic about it, with co-founder Christian Rudder writing, "Guess what, everybody: if you use the Internet, you're the subject of hundreds of experiments at any given time, on every site. That's how websites work."

Titled, "We Experiment on Human Beings!", Rudder explained three of its experiments, including the most questionable sounding one in which they told people who were bad matches that they actually had a high compatibility score, and found out the users were much more likely to exchange messages with a bad match OKCupid told them was a good one than a bad match the website told them truthfully wasn't right for them.

Rudder justified the experiments by saying this is how sites get better for their users, explaining, "Most ideas are bad. Even good ideas could be better. Experiments are how you sort all this out."

Childhood Obesity Linked to Early Onset of Puberty
Childhood obesity is contributing to the early onset of puberty in kids. Children are reaching puberty five years early than they were a century ago, with girls reaching sexual maturity at the age of 10-and-a-half in 2010 compared to 14-and-a-half in 1920, with boys maturing approximately a year later.

A Plymouth University study found that children who are overweight at the age of five tend to have lower levels of protein called sex hormone-binding globulin, causing them to reach puberty sooner. Researchers worry that this will lead to an earlier ability to reproduce and poorer long term adult health.

Fist Bumps ARE Better than Handshakes
Famed germaphobe Howie Mandel was right. Fist bumps are far more sanitary than handshakes. Scientists at Aberystwyth University in the UK discovered that handshakes transfer 10 times as many bacteria as a meeting of fists, while a palm-to-palm high-five was somewhere in-between. It is thought that the smaller area of contact and the shorter duration in the bump reduced the spread of bacteria.

The study's findings support the Journal of the American Medical Association's previous call to ban handshakes from hospitals.

Too Little Sleep Tricks the Memory
Being sleep deprived is not a good feeling. A new study reveals that sleep deprived people are more likely to form false memories. Researchers showed 104 students photos of a crime taking place, and then gave them false information about the images. Half of the students had slept and half had stayed awake the whole night before.

The sleep-deprived participants were found to be more likely to report made-up details as things they had "seen" in the photos than those who got a full night's sleep. Study author Steven Frenda says, "Our findings have implications for the reliability of eyewitnesses who may have experienced long periods of restricted or deprived sleep."

Men with Wider Faces Make More Money
What shape is your face? A new study finds that men with wide faces are more likely to get a bonus at work than men with thin faces. Experiments also showed that wide-faced men fare more poorly when it comes to business negotiations, and that men who are more attractive are better collaborators compared to less attractive men.

Previous research found that men with wide faces were more likely to lie and cheat, but lead more financially successful companies than thin-faced men.

TV After Work Makes You Feel Like a Loser
How do you relax after a long day of work? A new study finds that work-weary people who turn on the TV or play video games may feel like guilty failures after doing so. German and Dutch researchers asked 471 participants to talk about how they felt after work the previous day and about the media they used to veg out.

They found people who turned to TV and video games for relief reported feeling guilty afterwards-- like they should've done something more productive instead. A study co-author said, "In times of smartphones and mobile Internet, the ubiquitous availability of content and communication often seems to be a burden and a stressor rather than a recovery resource."

Fitness Tracker Gives Electric Shock If You Slack off
A new fitness band that's due out next year uses pain to help keep the wearer on track, delivering an electric shock whenever a goal is missed. Prevention says the Pavlok band delivers 340 volts of electricity, which founder and CEO Maneesh Sethi says compares to the static electric shock you feel when you touch a metal doorknob.

You first set a goal on the Pavlok, such as going to the gym every day, and if you live up to your goal, you're rewarded with things like money or a gift card or a free month at a gym. But if you miss going one day, you owe money to another user or you get zapped. Sethi says the goal is to reinforce good habits and punish bad ones to try to get rid of them.

Before he came up with the idea for the Pavlok, Sethi had an even more unusual way to help keep him accountable, with Prevention saying he hired a woman to slap him in the face every time he logged on to Facebook.

Night Owls and Early Birds Have Different Personality Traits
When you prefer to sleep can affect your personality and quality of life. Researchers looked at the lifestyle and personality traits of 700 students between the ages of 18 and 32. They found that early birds tended to be more persistent, and resistant to fatigue, frustration and difficulties. Night owls were found to be more extravagant, temperamental, impulsive and novelty-seeking.

Night owls were also found to be more likely to develop addictive behaviors, mental disorders and more likely to suffer from insomnia and ADHD. The differences may be due to genes, which can determine a person's circadian rhythm, or due to "social jet lag." The term is used to describe the lack of synchronization which can happen between a person's biological clock and society around them.
