Vacations to Moon Possible in 10 Years

If you could go anywhere for your vacation, would you choose to go to the moon? U.K. based travel search engine Skyscanner has released its new report about the future of travel, and predicts that by 2024 we really will be able to travel to the moon. They also envision a supersonic aircraft that would transport customers from London to Sydney, Australia in just two hours, and predict a trip to the deepest parts of the ocean will be just as mainstream as going to the beach.

Skyscanner CEO Gareth Williams writes, "I suspect we'll see the habitation of Mars and the ambitions of Mars One, or Elon Musk's vision, coming to fruition before space travel becomes common enough and cheap enough to be affordable for the majority."

Why Teens Need to Sleep in

How hard is it to get your teenager out of bed every morning? You're not alone. A new study reveals that the naturally occurring advances in the body that happen during puberty make it extremely difficult for teens to fall asleep before 11 P.M.

In their report, researchers argue that early school start times are depriving teens of sleep, leaving them not only cranky and lazy, but with health problems, too. The experts write, "Our ability to function optimally varies with biological time rather than conventional social times." They suggest later school start times are the only way to stop teen sleep deprivation.

People Who Believe in Guardian Angels Take Fewer Risks

Do you believe you have a guardian angel? It seems counterintuitive, but a new study reveals that those who believe they have a guardian angel take fewer risks than those who do not believe.

One hundred ninety-eight people were interviewed, and 68 percent of those who said they believe in guardian spirits said it affects how they view risks, and a clear majority said they're less likely to take risks. Lead researcher, Professor David Etkin says, "We think that those who are more risk-averse use belief in guardian spirits as a coping mechanism to deal with their fear and anxiety over perceived risks in their environment."

Top Ten Percent of American Drinkers Have 10x Drinks Per Day

hink you're a heavy drinker? According to the book "Paying the Tab," the top ten percent of adult drinkers in the U.S. consume an average of 74 alcoholic beverages per week--that's more than ten drinks each day. Book author Phillip Cook says, "I agree that it's hard to imagine consuming ten drinks a day, but there are a remarkable number of people who drink a couple of six-packs a day, or a pint of whiskey."

As for the rest of America, 30 percent of adults do not drink, and another 30 percent drink an average of less than one drink each week. All of this means that more than half of the alcohol Americans drink in a year goes into the bellies of the top ten percent of drinkers.

Toned Muscles Combat Stress

A good workout can really help you relax, and now scientists say they know why. Swedish researchers have discovered that toned muscles stop a stress chemical from reaching the brain, in fact the muscles actually filter out the dangerous substance. It turns out muscle-y people make more protective proteins called KATs, which prevent the stress chemical kynurenine from traveling to the brain.

The good news is that people can increase their KAT levels after just a few weeks of exercise. Study author Jorge Ruas says, "The muscle's function is reminiscent of the kidney or liver...Our work suggests that there is great therapeutic potential in harnessing one of the many beneficial effects of exercise [to combat stress and depression.]"

Online Relationships 3x More Likely to Divorce

Lasting relationships apparently do not start online. A new study of over four thousand couples reveals that those who met online were 28 percent more likely to divorce within the first year of marriage, compared to those who met in more traditional ways. Couples who met online were also found to be less likely to get married and generally have relationships of a poorer quality than those who met offline.

Study author Aditi Paul says, "Even though a large percentage of marriages in recent years have resulted from couples meeting online, looking for partners online may potentially suppress the desire for getting married."

Half of Married Women Have Back up Partner on Standby

Nothing in life is guaranteed, and a new study reveals that half of married women have a back-up partner in mind in case their marriage does not work out. A survey of one thousand U.K. women reveals that 50 percent say they have a "plan B" partner, and that on average they've known him for seven years.

One in ten women said her back-up had already confessed his undying love, and 20 percent said they're confident he would "drop everything" for her if she asked him to. About 25 percent said their feelings for their back up are as strong as their feelings for their partner, and 12 percent even admitted their feelings are "stronger" for their back up.

Still, half of women polled said their partner is aware of the "third party," and one in five of those women said they could joke about it with their partner. The good news-- one in three women said they doubted anything would ever happen with their back up man.

Genes Determine How You Enjoy Alcohol

Do you wince after a sip of vodka, or do you enjoy the taste? How you feel about the flavor may be determined by your genes. In a study, people with one version of a bitterness taste receptor gene said they found an alcoholic drink to be less bitter-tasting than those with a different version of the gene.

Study author Dr. John Hayes says, "It seems unlikely that the taste of alcohol matters at all once someone is alcohol-dependent. Still, taste genetics may be an important risk factor before someone becomes dependent." Researchers at the University of California-Davis MIND Institute found that a pregnant woman's low iron intake was associated with an up to five times greater risk of her child having autism.

Although this is the first study to show this link, many researchers had thought there could be an association, since children with autism are more likely to have low iron, and it's long been known that iron is important for brain development.

Maximize Your Productivity

To work more productively, work less; that's the finding of a new study. Researchers monitored workers using an app called DeskTime, to keep track of what they were doing at their desks. They discovered the most productive workers buckled down for 52 minutes of straight work at a time before taking a 17-minute break.

Study author Julia Gifford writes that the idea is to treat the 52-minute work periods "as sprints," while the breaks are dedicated to completely not working. Gifford also notes that five or ten minute breaks could be beneficial, if your boss isn't cool with the full 17 minutes.

Your Dreams Get Stranger as Night Goes on

Do you remember any of your dreams from last night? A new study reveals that our dreams get increasingly more bizarre as the night progresses. Researchers monitored the sleep of 16 participants and then woke them up at various intervals during the night to ask them about their dreams.

Early in the night participants were likely to report dreaming about media they'd consumed that day, but dreams about events that happened during waking life were more likely to occur later in the night. The craziest, most far-fetched and most emotional dreams were reported latest in the night. Study author Dr. Josie Malinowski believes that using dream therapy can help people understand their own behavior, thoughts and feelings in a way that makes them feel safe.

Numerical Skills Decided in Womb

Bad at math? Blame your mother. A new study reveals that a woman's hormone levels in pregnancy affect her child's math skills at age five. Over one thousand children were studied from the time they were in the womb until they started school. Kids whose mothers had very low levels of the hormone thyroxine while pregnant were found to be almost twice as likely to struggle with math compared to other kids.

The hormone was not linked to vocabulary and language skills, however. The experts think they may be able to head off the problem by simply testing women's hormones early in pregnancy and giving them thyroxine supplements if needed, as babies are not capable of producing the hormone themselves.

Fall Foliage to Start Later & Last Longer

It's almost time for the trees to bare their prettiest colors, but it might take longer than usual. Princeton University researchers say that a warming planet could push the peak of fall foliage back a few weeks by the end of the century. The leaves turn their reds and oranges because shorter days and cooler temperatures suppress the chloroplasts that create green pigments in trees in plants.

So the warmer it is, the longer the leaves will remain green. Additionally, the fall colors are expected to last longer, but not all forests will be affected equally. Trees in New England, for example, are expected to respond more dramatically to changes in climate than trees in Alaska.

iOS 8 Will Not Allow Authorities to Pull Private Data

Apple is showing the world it's serious about privacy. The company says that with the release of iOS 8 it is physically unable to pull private user data off someone's device. In an open letter on the Apple website, CEO Tim Cook writes, "Unlike our competitors, Apple cannot bypass your passcode and therefore cannot access this data.

So it's not technically feasible for us to respond to government warrants for the extraction of this data from devices in their possession running iOS 8." A representative from the American Civil Liberties Union says, "This is a great move. Apple seems to understand that consumers want companies to put their privacy first. However, I suspect there are going to be a lot of unhappy law enforcement officials."

Many Americans Plan to Travel This Fall

Got any vacation plans coming up? AAA's latest Consumer Pulse survey reveals three out of four people plan to travel this fall. The survey covered 1,200 residents in three states, and found that 75 percent of respondents said they plant to take "at least one leisure trip of 50 miles or more away from home, requiring overnight accommodations" in the next three months. Eighty three percent said those trips are likely to be in the U.S., while 13 percent said they plan to travel both internationally and domestically. Most said they expect to spend $500- $1,000 for these trips.

AAA's spokesman Mark Jenkins says, "People like to travel during the fall, because they can find great deals. School is back in session, which means hotels, cruises and attractions are not quite as crowded, so vendors are more likely to roll out lower rates to get your business."

Babies Born in Different Seasons Develop Differently

When is your birthday? New data shows that babies born in winter time begin crawling earlier than those born in the summer. Israeli researchers say they found that winter babies began crawling an average of five weeks before their counterparts born in summer or autumn. But why?

It might be because babes born in winter will usually be ready to crawl in the summer months, when there is more daylight. These babies will also wear less clothing, and spend more time on the floor on their stomachs. Researchers note that the seasonal effect is found only in places where the difference in home environment between summer and winter is significant.

What Movie Genre Makes You Eat More?

What's your favorite snack to munch on while watching something on a screen? A new study reveals that what you're watching can actually affect how much you eat. Ninety-four undergraduates students were plopped in front of a TV for 20 minutes and either shown a thriller, a thriller on mute, or a talk show.

All participants were given M&Ms, cookies and a variety of healthier snacks to enjoy as they watched TV. Those who watched the talk show ate 104.3 grams of food, while those who watched the thriller ate 206.5 grams. Those who watched the thriller without sound ate 124.1 grams of food.

Study author Anger Tal says the fast-paced style of action movies can really distract people, he adds, "They can make you eat more because you're paying less attention to how much you are putting in your mouth." To avoid falling into this behavior, bring pre-measured amounts of food in front of the tube.

Sugar is the ONLY Cause of Tooth Decay

If you hate getting cavities filled, lay off the sugar. A new study reveals that sugar is the one and only cause of tooth decay in both children and adults. U.K. researchers looked at public health records from around the world and found that about 60 to 90 percent of U.S. school-age kids, and 92 percent of adults had experienced tooth decay.

That's compared to just two percent of people of all ages living in Nigeria. Researchers say it's because those in Nigeria only eat about two grams of sugar per day, while Americans eat much more. One researcher says, "This means that it is now even more important to develop a radical prevention policy with a marked reduction in sugar intake since the use of fluoride on its own is insufficient to reduce substantially the burden [of dental care costs] over the lifetime of individuals."

Human beings communicate many emotions via facial expression, and a new study finds that wrinkle-smoothing Botox injections may be preventing young people from learning how to express emotions fully. U.K. researchers say it's a growing trend for people under age 25 to seek Botox injections, which reduce wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles in the upper face.

Lead researcher Helen Collier says that adolescents are thought to best learn to relate to people by mimicking facial expressions, and says reality TV shows and celebrity culture are causing young people to idealize "inexpressive frozen face." Dr. Michael Lewis adds, "Treatment with drugs like Botox prevents the patient from being able to make a particular expression and can therefore have an effect on our learning to feel emotion naturally."

There's No Such Thing as Comfort Food??

As summer cools off you may find yourself craving macaroni and cheese or mashed potatoes, but why? Do they really think the foods make the transition into fall easier?

A new study reveals that comfort foods really don't have the power to make us feel better. A group of participants were shown movie clips meant to evoke feelings of anger, fear, anxiety and sadness. Then half of them were given their comfort food of choice. It was found that those given comfort foods did not cheer up any faster than those given other foods or no food at all.

Basically, people may give comfort foods "credit" for helping them feel better faster, when really the same improvement would occur with just the passage of time. You'll need another excuse to finish off that package of Oreos."

How the QWERTY Keyboard Affects Baby Names

Modern technology affects us in all types of ways, and a new study reveals the popular "qwerty" keyboard has an impact on baby names. It may seem like a stretch, but researchers say parents are picking the majority of the letters in their child's name from the right side of the keyboard. The line dividing the keyboard into two sides runs between the letters "t" and "y", "g" and "h" and finally "b" and "n."

But why do we do this? The theory is that we associate things on our dominant side as "good," and the majority of people are right-handed, so the right side letters win out. The trend first developed in the year 1990 as "qwerty" style keyboards became popular.

How Fast Viruses Spread in Workplace

It's not quite fall, but the dipping temperatures are a reminder that winter isn't too far away. Colder temperatures mean more germs and illnesses going around, and a new study finds that it takes just a few hours for a virus to spread through an office or similar setting.

Researchers contaminated a single doorknob with a "tracer virus" and found that 40 to 60 percent of workers and visitors were infected with the virus after touching objects in the building. However the use of disinfectant wipes containing quartenary ammonium compounds (QUATS) were found to reduce the spread of the virus by 80 to 99 percent.

People Who Sleep More Get Sick Less

We tend to focus on how important it is for kids to sleep enough, but we should be following our own advice. New data reveals that adults who sleep between seven and eight hours a night miss fewer days of work due to sickness than others. Finnish researchers calculated that if sleep disturbances such as insomnia and apnea were eliminated the total cost of worker sick days could be cut down 28 percent.

They found, for example, that men who reported frequent insomnia symptoms had more than ten sick days per year, compared to five absences for men who never or rarely had trouble sleeping. Study leader Paula Salo says it's probably because, "People who get the sleep they need may in general take better care of their own health and well being, which obviously maintains work ability, too."

Rare Blood Type Linked with High Risk Memory Loss

There are some aspects of our health we have no control over, and one of them is our blood type. A new study finds that people with the rare blood type AB are 82 percent more likely to develop memory issues than people with other blood types. Over 30 thousand people were studied over a three year period to find this result, and 495 participants who initially reported no issues then went on to develop memory or cognitive issues during the study.

People with AB blood were found to make up six percent of the group who developed cognitive impairments, which is higher than the rate among the U.S. population. Study author Mary Cushman says, "Blood type is also related to other vascular conditions like stroke, so the findings highlight the connections between vascular issues and brain health.

Student Debt Impacts the Elderly

College is really expensive, and has been for a while. A new report from the Government Accountability Office reports that a soaring number of Americans are facing poverty in old age because they still carry their student debt. The government has the power to slash Social Security or disability benefits to pay off federal student loans, and last year 155 thousand people experienced the cuts, compared with just 31 thousand in 2002.

Senator Bill Nelson says, "Some may think of student debt as just a young person's problem. As it turns out, that's increasingly not the case." Many of the elderly are still paying off their debt from when they were much younger, while others took out loans after going back to school later in life, and others co-signed loans for children or grandchildren.

Beer Prices May Rise Next Year

Mother Nature is messing with your beer. Farmers report that wet weather in Idaho, North Dakota and Montana has caused a lot of barley to germinate early, which means it can't be used to make beer. The owner of Angry Hank's microbrewery says, "We've been told to expect major price increases for malt. There is no panic yet...There is carryover from last year's malt supply. Our prices are stable until January, but beer prices are going up." The prices are expected to be particularly high because it's unusual for crops in all three states to be hit with problems at the same time.

Age Which Men and Women Find Each Other Most Attractive

What age group do you go after? After analyzing the profiles of daters on OKCupid and OKTrends, researchers have created graphs indicating how our tastes in partners changes as we age. Study leader Christian Rudder says, "Women who are, say, 28 find guys who are also 28 about the most attractive, and so forth. Up until about 40, when that's getting too old."

Not surprisingly, the findings reveal men at all ages find women at age 20 most attractive. To that, Rudder comments, "From the time you're 22 you'll be less hot than a 20-year-old, based on this data. So that's just a thing. It is kind of terrible."

Male Birth Control on the Way

For now, women bare the most responsibility when it comes to birth control, but that could all change in a few short years. Non-profit organization the Parsemus Foundation says it's developed a male birth control injection that it calls Vasalgel, and that the current trials of the drug are showing promising results.

The special gel is injected into the vas deferens-- the tube that sperm pass through on the way to the penis-- to block sperm from passing. Developers hope the drug will be cheap, long-lasting and reversible. For now the drug is being tested on baboons, but if the trials continue to go well, human testing is expected to start next year.

The fan talked about how the two should be together and not date over social media. Anna said he wanted to be a gentleman, but he creeped her out and she had to throw them away.

Here's her quote, "I got a gift with, like, a really long letter about how he really felt like we should be together, and if I would just give him a chance, and he didn't want to do it over social media because he thought that would pressure me because it was public...he wanted to be a gentleman. And he, uh, sent me a pair of diamond earrings." She continued, "For real diamond earrings. I did go and check. And I was just like, these have to go into the trash. I can't. I cannot. I cannot wear them. I can't give them to someone. It's too weird. If the teddy bear goes in the trash, these go in the trash. Just on principle. So, I had to throw them away. Children Bullied By Siblings More Likely to Be Depressed

An Oxford University study has found that children who were regularly bullied by a sibling as a child were more likely to be clinically depressed in their late teens. Researchers spoke with 3,500 12-year olds and followed up with them six years later. Almost 800 said they had been bullied several times a week when young.

These young men and women were twice as likely as those to be clinically depressed as young adults as those who hadn't been tormented by a sibling. They were also twice as likely to say they had self-harmed within the previous year compared with those who had not been bullied. The study also found girls more likely to be victims than boys – with big brothers often the perpetrators.

Science Closer to Discovering Root of Autism

A Princeton University professor claims to have found the cause of autism. A paper published by molecular biology and neuroscience associate professor Dr. Samuel Wang argues that a brain injury sustained in the womb or early in a child's growth could be the root cause of autism. He contends that damage to the cerebellum contributes to autism spectrum disorders and other neurodevelopmental orders later in life.

The cerebellum, Dr. Wang theorizes, is responsible for helping young minds process complex sensory information, which, over time, eventually leads them to form normal social relationships. Early damage to the cerebellum could also affect other 'downstream' areas of the brain, such as those responsible for cognition, which would most likely inhibit normal development.

Babies Sleeping on Animal Skins Develop Fewer Allergies

Setting baby to sleep on a sheepskin rug or other animal skin during the can lessen asthma risks. German doctors say that microbes found in animal skin could help protect against asthma and allergies by strengthening the immune system.

Children who slept on an animal skin during the first three months of life were 79 percent less likely to have asthma by the time they were six and 41 percent less likely to have asthma by the time they were 10.

Dr. Christina Tischer, from the Helmholtz Zentrum Munchen Research Center said that this study supports the "hygiene hypothesis," which argues that society has become so obsessed with cleanliness, we no longer come into contact with some of the crucial bugs that keep our immune systems working well.

Red Heads are First to Go Gray!

Most women start going grey in their early thirties, but the exact age can vary by hair color. British women typically start going gray at the age of 33, but redheads find their first strands at 30 while brunettes go grey at 32 and blondes can usually hold out until age 35.

The research, conducted by hair product Charles Worthington Instant Root Concealer, also found that a woman's career can impact her changing hair color. Those who work late nights in the entertainment industry tend to need hair dye the earliest, at age 27 whereas call center workers can usually resist until their mid-thirties.

Ordinary Memories Best in Hindsight

It's the little things in life that count, goes the cliché. The results of a new study echo that idea-- researchers have found that ordinary memories may mean more to us than seemingly exciting life event memories. Participants were asked to make a time capsule of mundane items, such as three songs they were currently listening too, or a Facebook status, and then asked to rate how interested they'd be in the items three months later.

At the end of the three months, participants found they were much more interested in the items than they predicted they would be. Study leader Ting Zhang says, "What is ordinary now becomes more extraordinary in the future. People find a lot of joy in rediscovering a music playlist from three months ago or an old joke with a neighbor, even if those things did not seem particularly meaningful in the moment." So soak up the moments in your day to day life-- they may end up mattering to you the most.

Scientists on Thursday announced the 2005 discovery in Argentina of the fossilized remains a newly-discovered, huge dinosaur that was the largest known terrestrial animal. The dinosaur weighed 65 tons, with study author Kenneth Lacovara saying, "To put this in perspective, an African elephant is about five tons, T. rex is eight tons, Diplodocus is 18 tons, and a Boeing 737 is around 50 tons." In honor of its massive size, the dino was given the name Dreadnoughtus, meaning "fears nothing." Despite its intimidating proportions, the dinosaur was a plant-eater.

College Grads Take Average of 10 Years to Make back Cost of Degree

College grads may be shouldering a ton of debt, but that doesn't mean college isn't worth it. New York Federal Reserve Bank looked at data on college students, and found the average graduate takes ten years to make back the cost of their degree. Researchers compared current data to findings from as far back as 1970, and say that a college degree pays off twice as fast today as it did in 1980. They also found that a college student today who takes an extra year to complete their bachelor's degree loses out on $37,000 in wages and earn $41,000 less over their lifetime. Additionally, students with engineering, math, or computer science degrees experienced the highest rate of return on their education investment.

Forgiveness is Sign of Mental Health

How easily do you forgive people? A new study reveals that being a forgiving person probably means you're a mentally healthy person. Psychologists had 148 young adults fill out questionnaires regarding their physical and emotional stress, well-being, and their tendencies to be "forgiving" towards themselves or others. They found that greater forgiving tendencies correlated with fewer negative mental health symptoms. It's not clear why this connection exists, but it may be because forgiving people are better at coping with life's events. It's thought that teaching forgiveness may be a valuable mental health early intervention strategy
