Use a Lot of Filler Words? You're More Thoughtful!

Do you know someone who uses tons of filler words such as "um," "like," "you know," and "I mean"?  It turns out those people are full of complex thoughts.
A new study indicates that people throw in filler words in an attempt to pause for a moment to collect their thoughts, or to prevent the listener from starting to speak. For example, people throw in "like" when they don't want to fully commit to a thought, and "you know" when they want the listener to make inferences about the conversation, or when they want to ensure the listener understands what is being said.
The data shows people who used these fillers were most likely to have the personality trait of conscientiousness. In other words, they are more aware of themselves, so they have a strong desire to rephrase or share opinions with their audience.
