Why People Risk Their Lives over a Smartphone

It's not uncommon to hear of people risking their lives to save their smartphone. But why do people do people jump onto to train tracks or a frozen river just to get a phone? Psychologist Dr. Bryan Reuther explains, saying, "Although the cost of these devices is likely a factor in an attempted rescue or protection, it perhaps goes beyond that."

It's because smartphones bring together so many parts of our lives, and some people begin to see the devices as representations of the bond to the people they use it to communicate with. Reuther adds, "We become attached to this technology because of our reliance on it, and in a way these devices become part of us. Without them, we may get anxious or upset or even feel disconnected."
