Working Extra Hard Isn't Worth It
Sit back and relax, it turns out going the extra mile doesn't mean much.
Study author Ayelet Gneezy says, "Breaking one's promise is costly, but exceeding it does not appear worth the effort." A series of experiments showed that "promise receivers consistently failed to recognize the additional effort required to exceed a promise."
In other words, getting a task done on time makes people happy, getting it done late makes them angry, but getting it done early doesn't matter to them. Gneezy adds, "Just keeping your word is good enough, focus on that."
